  • Vodafone offers 4K services on its cable platforms in Germany and Spain

Vodafone Deutschland launched its GigaTV service including 4K channels this month. Besides the obvious football no specifics on 4K content are provided, the service includes upto 63 HD channels. The 4K box includes 1 Gigabyte of local storage and those that take the box will also get the cable network independent GigaTV Go app to watch the service's content on mobile devices in or out of the home, and second or third television set. The OTT stand-alone service costs €9,99 per month.

In Spain the service uses a Sagemcom made Tivo box and offers five 4K channels Odisea 4K, Slow channel, Festival 4K, Insight 4K and Fun Box UHD, aswell as 4K Netflix content. And of course football.

Vodafone Spain has started upgrading its HFC network to DOCSIS 3.1, to allow for symmetrical gigabit speeds. Huawei is responsible for the upgrade, that is reported to cost around 100 million euro, and may include FTTH extension, and to take upto two years. In Germany the corenetwork is upgraded by a Cisco/Ericsson joint-venture. The videoservice is using Cisco's Infinite Video Platform.
