Im thinking the end result would be hard to distinguish between the two. It is still not so easy to configure a PC to spit out 4k even with the latest video cards. Lets not forget the PC would also be scaling alternative content to 4k.
On the video processor side there is the new Barco unit and Peter pointed out a few other heavy contenders.
A PC can always be updated as technology advances where as a standalone VP may end up being an expensive boat anchor but forgetting about the price if wanting the very best 4k image feeding a d-cinema 4k projector would you go HTPC direct into the projector or let a worthy 4k processor perform the up-scaling and drive the projector. Looking forward to hearing from others.
