  • A real Cinedream in Belgium, '4K' HD upto €10K MSRP projector shoot-out

    (C) Werner van den Eede

Belgian Home Theater Dealer Home@TheMovies/Cinedream went the extra mile this past weekend organising a side-by-side shoot-out of five recently launched higher mid-range projectors, all native or virtual 4K using pixelshift technology, the new HDR capable 'e-shift' JVC X5000, JVC X7000, the native 4K panel Sony VW-320, and Sony VW-520, the pixel shifting 4K Epson LS-10000 LASER-Phosphor projector.

Conclusion by attendees was that JVC's motion interpolation has improved and when used sparingly approaches that of Sony, but Sony still rules this space. The JVC, are brighter than the Sony's, and have a lower blackfloor. The e-shift cost brightness and makes 1080P content a bit fuzzy, so should not be used on HD content, on 4K content it comes close to Sony's native 4K projectors. Black values are perceived as close between the latest Sony and JVCs. The Epson held its own, albeit being clearly less bright than the Sony's and the brighter JVCs.

I miss Infocomm where they use to do side by side shootouts with all the projectors.

Indeed, though from what I have read there was always 'discussion' about the rules of the shoot-out, and no-one was willing to participate at some point years ago. Pure brightness comparision is less relevant these days, and then we come to the issues of contrast, colorcontrast, and color lumens. Even new solid state rgb lightengines may have considerably less relevant = colorful light output than specified. The white papers on Philips new ColorSparQ HLD reference projector this was quite clear, a little over 2700 white lumens, only a little over 1200 initial sRGB D65 lumens, and 3000 lumens on the books. Over at AVS they contest Epson's Color Light Output claims by saying it is only with a greenpushed image, proper image also sees a considerable drop in output. But Bob had a nice article today following an Epson staged event meeting with US color expert Karl Lang.

We will see how DLP will stack up next year when the 4K and pixel shifting 4K LCoS projectors will be joined by the 0.7" DMD Quad Pixel Drive DLP projectors in the same price and performance category, judging by colour lumens, that is as TI reportedly sees initial adoption in the 5000 lumens/$/€ class.
