  • CES: Optoma establishes new projector category 4K, single chip, solid state

In an exclusive Technology Demo Optoma unveils the World’s First 4K HLD (ColorSpark High Lumen Density) Projector, in partnership with DLP chipmaker Texas Instruments, lightsource vendor Phillips and Optoma parent Coretronic, it demonstrated the first 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) projector using a single DLP chip at CES. Optoma showed a DLP projector with ColorSpark HLD lightsource at Infocomm in June of 2015,and announced it will show its first 4K projector based on the new pixelshifting DLP chip at the ISE show next month. Following this announcement my first response was now if Optoma combines this 4K DMD, first launched privately last October at CEDIA, with the Philips Solid Sate lightsource Optoma will have something that stands out from the rest. No more limited on-off contrast because the electronic iris alternative is generally turned off because it was too slow and showed a pumping effect. No more colorwheel noise, and great color, at reasonable brightness. Initial brightness on HLD is 1200 lumens, in sRGB colorspace at an D65 whitepoint. The US version of the LG PF1500 offers 900 calibrated lumens, and is currently the brightest LED projector on sale. The European version is limited to 700 lumens when calibrated. So accurate colors at 1200 lumens is a clear step up for LED projection.

It might even open new avenues for Coretronic, depending on execution, as the 4K and 8K e-shift Laser-Phosphor projectors only offer 1100 lumens either. High priced projectors used in simulators by Boeing. Color accuracy left something to be desirred with the image having a greenish hue, according to DCI-Forum's own CES correspondent Peter Cineramax. He added that it unfortunately features a cheap lens.

For Home Theater this is a completely price category for Optoma, $10,000. Availability in August, with TI starting to ship its pixel-shift 4K DMD in April.

So there clearly is some truth in Optoma Technology, Inc.'s claim that it is 'showcasing the home entertainment technology of the future; available and within reach today here at CES 2016'.

“As 4K content is finally becoming more common and accessible, the timing is right for a premium 4K viewing technology solution for the home consumer market”, says Jon Grodem, Senior Director of Product Management. “Having the first 4K UHD DLP single-chip projector shown at CES marks an important strategic position for Optoma to advance our high end product offering and be the leader in the high performance projection market.”

The DLP 4K UHD solution leverages the fast speed of the chip with advanced image processing to deliver more than 8 million pixels to the screen with 4 million mirrors. Each mirror is capable of switching over 9,000 times per second, creating two distinct and unique pixels on the screen during every frame to deliver full 4K UHD resolution. This DLP chipset also has precise pixel alignment and no HUE purple effect thanks to the DLP Technology advantages.

“4K UHD comes to life when all of the details in the content are accurately displayed,” said Dave Duncan, DLP Products business manager, Texas Instruments. “We are pleased that Optoma is demonstrating with their projector the ability to incorporate a 4K UHD display chip that’s roughly the same size as our 1080p chip, this new solution from TI DLP Products can be a game changer for the industry.”

Optoma introduced the first 1080p LED High Lumen Density projector at InfoComm in June of this year and is excited to again hold an industry first by featuring the technology progression from 1080p HLD to 4K.

Grodem adds, “HLD technology will enable a new generation of far brighter LED DLP projectors with industry leading color performance and accuracy. Optoma is proud to be leading the effort and introducing it to the home theater market in 2016.”
