I have seen a number of announcement come by on DCI-forum and elsewhere, of low(er) cost 4K and generally smaller size 4K displays, in the 40-48 inch range and 50/55 inch. The smaller start around 400-500 USD, the larger range at 600-700 USD, with Euro pricing generally a bit higher. Primarily from TCL and Hisense, with the US having another key player in Vizio.
So are the lower cost, smaller size 4K TVs/monitors very usable?
Commodity 4K displays, how can we use these, and spread 4K into every nook and cranny?
The smaller ones would make for great personal displays, based on their size, if the image quality holds up, also for graphics, and characters, i.e. text.
Of course all the press releases an their online re-writes are saying these are the beezknees, but how good are they?
The smaller range are a bit small as a TV, but have a great size for a 'personal display', so good for graphics and text besides more fluid video?
Other applications of smaller screens that may benefit from these, or their bigger 50/55 siblings?
Both Philips and Dell launched 43" IPS 4K desktop monitors, with the Dell acting as a 1080P Quadviewer as an bonus. Of course Dedicated desktop monitors come at a price premium compared to the displays labelled as TV.
