Amazon Releases Its First Dolby Vision HDR Titles
This includes selections from Sony Pictures' catalog and the second season of Amazon original series 'Bosch.'
Amazon Video has released its first batch of titles for streaming in the Dolby Vision high dynamic range format: Select movies from Sony Pictures plus the second season of Amazon original series Bosch.
High dynamic range means that the TV will display a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks in an image. Amazon Dolby Vision titles can be viewed with a Dolby Vision-supported LG smart TV.
The Sony titles include The Smurfs 2, After Earth, Men in Black 3, Hancock, Salt, Pineapple Express, Fury, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Chappie and Elysium.
Amazon's Dolby Vision catalog is a subset of the titles that Amazon offers in its catalog on the HDR format known as HDR 10, which can be viewed on compatible Samsung, Sony and LG smart TVs.
Amazon said it intends to offer at least 150 hours of HDR content by the end of the year.

Last year, Amazon began offering 4K HDR content on its video services, and now it has expanded its support of the high quality format to include Dolby Vision, the other (and arguably better) high dynamic range format. The second season of of Amazon's original series Bosch is now available in Dolby Vision through Amazon Prime Video, and a number of movies from Sony Pictures including The Smurfs 2, Men in Black 3, Salt, Fury, Pineapple Express, and Elysium are available for purchase through Amazon Video, the company announced today.
Netflix already supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10 (the industry name for standard HDR) and Vudu supports Dolby's format as well, so Amazon is pretty much playing catch up at this point. But for owners of LG's Super UHD and OLED sets — both of which support the Dolby Vision format — the move should be a welcome addition.
Update: June 27th: 1:15PM ET: Updated to note that Vizio's M-Series and P-Series also support Dolby Vision.
Update: June 27th: 5:55PM ET: Amazon Video's new Dolby Vision HDR content is only supported on LG Super UHD and OLED TVs, and not Vizio's Reference Series, M-Series, and P-Series TVs despite the sets supporting Dolby Vision.

Today, Amazon Video will begin offering titles in Dolby Vision HDR—and 2016 LG SUPER UHD and LG OLED TVs are the first to deliver them in both Dolby Vision and HDR10.
LG is the first to support both available HDR formats—HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR—so consumers can enjoy more true-to-life images on LG’s stunning 4K displays without worrying about format compatibility. (Samsung and Sony only support HDR10).
With support for both HDR formats, LG SUPER UHD and OLED TVs offer consumers access to all the HDR content available today, and peace of mind that their TV will handle new content to come. With only one format, consumers risk missing out on content that becomes available exclusively in Dolby Vision.
In fact, Dolby Vision is the only HDR option offered by VUDU and it is the preferred HDR format for both Netflix and Amazon Video. It’s worth noting that when streaming content from Amazon and Netflix is available in both HDR formats, Dolby Vision is the default format.
As of today, 2016 LG OLED and LG SUPER UHD TVs support streaming HDR content in both Dolby Vision and HDR10 from Amazon Video and Netflix, and Dolby Vision HDR content from VUDU.
Amazon, Netflix and VUDU have announced plans to expand their HDR content library with new titles available in Dolby Vision HDR. By the end of the year, Amazon and Netflix each will deliver 150 hours of HDR content.
Amazon Video currently offers several acclaimed titles in Dolby Vision, including hit Amazon Original Series Bosch as well as blockbuster movie titles such as The Smurfs 2, After Earth, Men in Black 3, Hancock, Salt, Pineapple Express, Fury, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Chappie and Elysium.
Netflix’s Marco Polo: Season 1 is currently available in Dolby Vision HDR.
