Together with Cineplexx International, the leading Austrian cinema operator is further expanding its operations within the SEE (South East Europe) region. After a construction time of just six months, Cineplexx has opened a state-of-the-art 5-screen multiplex cinema with 800 seats and the latest cutting-edge movie technology in the third-largest Serbian city of Niš. The first location of the Cineplexx group in the Republic of Kosovo was opened in the last week of November in the Republic's capital Priština, after a construction time of four months. The 6-screen multiplex cinema offers seating for 1,000 visitors. Both venues in Niš and in Priština offer the newest cinema technology: all of the screens are digital, and feature 3D projection technology as well as the latest Dolby sound system. In addition to this, the largest screen also provides 4K and high-frame-rate technology. "The opening in Niš and Priština marks a new chapter in our success story in the SEE region. We expect up to 250,000 visitors every year", says Christof Papousek, CFO and partner at Cineplexx International.
Further project in Serbia under construction
The new cinema in Niš is the fourth location in Serbia operated by the family-owned company. In the last three years, two Cineplexx cinemas have been opened in Belgrade and one cinema in Kragujevac. The 11-screen cinema in Belgrade's USCE Shopping Centre is the largest move theatre in Serbia. A further project in Serbia is currently under construction: an 8-screen multiplex cinema in the Belgrade shopping centre 'Belgrade Plaza' with 1,500 seats and the first screen in the entire SEE region to use laser projection technology. The opening is planned for April 2017.
Cineplexx International: SEE region market leader
Since beginning its expansion plans in 2009, Cineplexx has been able to continuously strengthen its position in South East Europe. In 2011, the group opened its first cinema in Croatia. Expansion into Serbia followed soon thereafter. Since then, Cineplexx is now also present in Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania and Slovenia. With the opening of a new cinema in Thessaloniki last year, the company entered the Greek market for the first time. "Our company is very well positioned in this region and we are market leaders in several countries. Cinemas are extremely popular in South East Europe. An increasing number of shopping centre operators therefore consider cinemas an indispensible element of entertainment", says Christof Papousek, CFO and partner at Cineplexx International at the opening in Niš and in Priština. As of spring 2017, Cineplexx will become the largest cinema operator in the Western Balkan region with a total of twenty cinemas in eight SEE countries.
Constantin Film Holding GmbH
The film distributor Constantin Film Holding GmbH was founded in Austria in 1951. A second mainstay was created at the end of the 1960's in the segment of cine operations. In 2009, the Cineplexx INTERNATIONAL GmbH started expanding to Austria's neighbouring countries and the first cinema outside Austria was opened in Bolzano, South Tyrol. Cineplexx also took over a cinema in Zagreb's city centre, thus laying the foundation for expansion into Croatia. Further Cineplexx cinemas followed in 2011 and 2012 in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. In 2013 Cineplexx established five multiplex movie theatres in Slovenia and the first seven-screen cinema in Albania. The last expansion has taken place recently, in November 2016 with the opening of a multiplex cinema in Priština, Kosovo. Today, Cineplexx has a strong market presence with 40 multiplex and six traditional locations in Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Greece and Italy, offering 291 screens.
