SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the introduction of the OV12A10 and OV12A1B, two large-pixel image sensors built on OmniVision's PureCel®Plus technology for exceptional image quality. OmniVision specifically designed this 1.25-micron, 12-megapixel image sensor family to meet the feature and performance demands of dual-camera technologies, which OmniVision sees as a booming trend in both high-end and mainstream mobile markets. The OV12A10 and OV12A1B offer advanced DSLR features such as optical zoom, high dynamic range (HDR), and hand jitter reduction with excellent low-light performance and power efficiency.
"Mainstream devices are offering exceptional image quality by adopting powerful imaging technologies such as dual cameras with sensors that feature optical zoom and low-light enhancements," said James Liu, senior technical marketing manager at OmniVision. "By equipping the OV12A10 and OV12A1B with these features, OmniVision hopes to democratize high-end imaging, no longer limiting it to flagship phones."
According to Yole Développement's recent report on CMOS image sensor technology, dual cameras are estimated to achieve a penetration rate of up to 20 percent in the mobile market by 2020. As noted in a similar report by MarketsandMarkets, a current key trend is that consumers prefer to carry a dual-camera smartphone rather than a dedicated camera in addition to a smartphone. This trend is expected to increase demand for high-performance image quality and advanced features in mobile dual cameras at mainstream prices.
The OV12A family is built on OmniVision's PureCel Plus technology, which implements buried color filter array (BCFA) and deep trench isolation (DTI) for dramatically reduced color crosstalk, as well as improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensor angular response. The OV12A10 also comes with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) support, capturing 12-megapixel resolution at 30 frames per second (FPS), 4K2K video at 30 FPS, or 1080p resolution at 90 FPS.
OmniVision's OV12A10 and OV12A1B (monochrome sensor) are currently available for sampling and are expected to enter volume production in the first quarter of 2017.
