Experience the next generation of high-contrast laser illuminated projection, offering High Dynamic Range and super-smooth 3D
Las Vegas, 20th March 2017 – Sony Digital Cinema 4K comes to CinemaCon this year with a public demonstration of its eagerly awaited next-generation prototype of 4K RGB laser projection system.
CinemaCon delegates have the opportunity to unveil the future prototype of 4K laser projection from Tuesday through Thursday, with demonstrations held hourly in Pompeian Ballroom I – Promenade Level. Sessions are open to all trade show visitors, with no prior booking required.
The high-brightness system offers spectacular native 4K images, with on-screen contrast levels dramatically exceeding inferior first-generation laser projectors. Offering an industry leading contrast ratio, Sony’s SRX-R500 series of 4K projection solutions are High Dynamic Range (HDR) ready.
Delivering impressively bright on-screen highlights plus extended lowlight shadow detail, HDR brings cinematic presentation even closer to reality. And while Sony’s current high-contrast SRX-R500 Series projectors are already ‘HDR ready’, the introduction of an RGB laser light source also affords the opportunity to project suitably-mastered 4K HDR content with an expanded colour space (gamut) – enriching cinemagoers’ viewing experience still further.
The prototype 4K RGB laser projection system features a unique optical system that simultaneously displays two 4K resolution images through a single lens: this allows patrons to enjoy smooth, easy-on-the-eye 3D screenings. The solution enables 3D presentation on existing silver screens with minimal or no speckle, using low-cost disposable glasses as favoured commercially by the majority of cinema operators.
“We’ve always insisted we’re going to do laser right, and at the right time” says David McIntosh, Vice President, Sony Digital Cinema 4K Solutions for Europe and the Americas.
“In a post-VPF world, laser projection is a major investment for any theater owner. If you’ve been holding out for the economics and technical performance of laser to stack up, now’s definitely the time for a second look and we know our customers will be genuinely impressed with what they see from us this year at CinemaCon.”
In addition, Sony has recently exhibited (at CineAsia in December 2016), a complementary 4K laser-illuminated projection solution based on phosphor technology. Providing high image quality and contrast, like Sony’s acclaimed SRX-R515P but with a laser light source, the High Dynamic Range-capable projector also uses Sony’s unique dual lens system for 3D presentation.
All audio solutions for the Sony laser demonstrations during CinemaCon are being kindly provided by Alcons Audio.
At CinemaCon, Sony representatives will also be discussing how laser complements the complete portfolio of SRX-R500 Series high-brightness (up to 60,000 lumens) 4K projection solutions for every size of screen. All Sony projectors offer industry-leading picture quality with one of the highest contrast ratios for incredible entertainment experiences with simple maintenance and highly attractive ownership costs, even on the biggest PLF (Premium Large Format) screens. The reliable HPM (High Pressure Mercury) multi-lamp array in every SRX-R500 Series projector assures show continuity by removing the risk of ‘dark screen’ outages. Even if one lamp fails during the performance, presentation continues uninterrupted at slightly reduced brightness, without impairing audiences’ enjoyment of the show.
About Sony 4K Digital Cinema:
Sony Digital Cinema 4K gives audiences an entertainment experience they’ll never forget in 2D or 3D.
There’s a complete family of Sony 4K projection systems to suit every cinema operator, from small boutique screens to the largest multiplex. All our easy-to-use projectors deliver 4K resolution images that viewers love, bursting with rich colour and industry-leading 8000:1 average contrast ratio. Sony’s SRX-R500 series of projectors are also HDR-ready, meeting brightness and contrast requirements for screening the latest 4K movies mastered for High Dynamic Range presentation.
Spectacular 4K images are matched by impressively low running costs. The long-lasting HPM multi-lamp array in all our SRX-R500 Series projectors is more energy efficient than traditional Xenon lamps, reducing routine maintenance and cutting the risk of revenue-threatening dark screens.
A compelling choice for the big screens, our Premium Large Format (PLF) projection solution outshines costly first generation laser systems, with unrivalled 4K picture quality at light levels up to 60,000 lumens. Currently in development, a ground-breaking new generation RGB 4K laser projector from Sony Digital Cinema will give theatre owners an additional choice of light source for presenting HDR-ready images in 2D or smooth, immersive 3D on the largest screens.
