  • Dutch incumbent Telco KPN launches country's first 4K service July 1

KPN has been trialing 4K since last summer's European Football Championship tournament. With the 4K signal provided by Flemish public broadcaster VRT. Reportedly the trial was limited to 1000 subscribers with 4K TV sets, later extended to 1500.

The trial offered two 4K channels, and limited on-demand content. KPN has started to offer the Netflix 4K service to its subscribers. But KPN has yet to provide details on the 4K channels, and content included with the new 4K tier.

KPN's 4K tier will be the country's first commercialy available 4K service.

The new tier will cost €69,- a month and include two 4K capable set-top-boxes, (cloud) recording capability, and 100/10 internet access (speeds depending on DSL connection).

KPN and the consolidated cable operator Ziggo have been raising prices, for the past few years, as basically this resulted in a duopoly. With the new internet+TV plans KPN also raises its prices. The telephony rates will be raised on August 1, as KPN generally bills every two months. The DVB-T over-the-air TV service Digitenne will see yet another 11% price hike, this means the price of a subscription to the service has basically doubled over past few years. Terestrial broadcast acts as a service of last resort, so people have little or no choice to accept the price hikes. Consequently the number of subscribers has dropped below 300,000. As KPN also promotes its fixed line service.

On the internet delivered TV service it is not only raising rates, but also cutting channels. Speculation is that it is looking to compensate for the higher rate it has to pay for the Fox Sports channels that offer the national Football league matches. Fox demands a monthly per subscriber charge from operators, regardless whether the subscriber actually takes out a subscription to the football/sports channels.
