  • IBC 2017: TVT DMC move to First Virtual IP Broadcast Cloud complete

So "we can put a bom under it", leaving SDI in the dust, SVP of Technology Jean-Louis Lods, clearly thrilled with the result of a two year programme to build what has become the first fully virtualised broadcast Media datacenter or broadcast cloud, joked about the future of his 17 year old but constantly updated dedicated broadcast facility. A broadcast facility using tried and true standards with dedicted equipment for each job. Like all broadcast facilities for the past decades it was built around coaxial cables carrying Serial Digital or SDI signals. The new facility instead is all IP, and completely virtualised running on generic servers.

lods spoke during a special presentation and tour of the facility, honouring the transition of all 87 channels, or 105 streams, from the traditional dedicated broadcast hardware to the first virtualised private broadcast cloud, or media datacenter.

Being the first virtualised private broadcast cloud DMC and its partners Pebble Beach, Redhat, VM Ware, and Equinox datacenter are nominated in the IBC Innovation Awards, being awarded tonight Sunday, September 17th at 18:30 CET at the RAI Auditorium in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. DMC's Home town.

The full IP facility that composites channels from content delivered from all over the world plays out channels for international broadcasters across the world. The new IP infrastructure allows DMC to launch new channels in hours instead of weeks. Concentrating all efforts in one central broadcast datacenter, brings economies of scale, to the company with offices from londen to Tokyo and Sydney, and Los Angelos opening early next year to serve content owners and distributors worldwide.

The on-site equipment room is tiny, everything running on servers in an Equinox Tier 3++ datacenter five kilometers down the road. This means most staff works in regular offices. And the media control room being very quiet and easily cooled. Four operators monitoring around 25 channels each, allows the facility to run, with traffic staff working during regular office hours.
