Liao Wei-lun, president of AUO's video products business group said that AU Optronics will start shipping 65-85 inch 8K LCD TV Panels in the first half of the year. Digitimes reports. This should mean we will get to see the first TVs based on those panels in the second half of the year.
Liao expects that 8K TVsof 65" and larger will hit an 10% market share in 2020. Therefore AUO will begin volume production of 8K TV panels soon to cash in on the emerging trend, according to Digitimes.
Global sales of 65- and 70-inch display are to grow by 40% and 50% this year compared to 2017. 4K TVs in general is to reach a 40% penetration, a 33"growth over last year, so AUO will focus on these products. Liao expects 4K to establish itself as the standard for 50" and above TVs this year.
Currently the only 8K Consumer TV available is a Sharp 70" that started shipping in September in China, and December in Japan. A sister company to Chinese owned Sharp just opened a gen 10.5 LCD plant that is optimized for 60-75" panel production.
BOE also has plans for 8K panel production this year.
