  • Aussie WWI casulaties not peerless in AV-stacked National Memorial in France

The Sir John Monash Australian National Centre, which opened in April 2018, the 100th anniversary of the battle for Villers-Bretonneux, recalls the role played by the Australian allied forces during the various battles of the Somme between 1914 and 1918.The new Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux, northern France, has deployed over 140 mounting solutions from Peerless-AV. The project, that created the exibits using 400 LCD displays was managed by Orpheo Group and its partner network – Videmus, ADSI, Digital Liance.

Financed by the Australian Government, the Sir John Monash Centre is a memorial site with a difference. This high-tech facility comprises several multimedia galleries, equipped with over 400 LCD screens, a complete video integration and broadcasting system, show control technology and other equipment. The various solutions deployed by Orpheo Group, a French company specialising in multimedia visitor guides, allow visitors to literally be at the side of Australian and French soldiers engaged in combat in the battles of Villers Bretonneux and Le Hammel.

The centre-piece of this memorial is an immersive gallery, equipped with nearly 200 screens and a spatialised audio system, providing a 360° audio and video experience. The immersive experience is enhanced by smoke emission effects and light beams, in perfect sync with the video.

To achieve this result, the group also had to take into account the Centre’s special architectural features. Orpheo launched an invitation to tender procedure to find a supplier capable of meeting the special requirements in its tender specifications, within the allotted timeframe. These included manufacturing 96 quick release pop-out video wall mounts with a slim overall depth from the wall, and another 48 flat video wall mounts for attaching screens to a sloping wall, while ensuring the utmost safety.

Peerless-AV was the only manufacturer in France capable of supplying a quick release video wall mounting solution with the dimensions Orpheo required. The DS-VW755S Ultra Slim Quick Release Video Wall Mount, which according to peerless-AV is the industry’s slimmest video wall mount, with a fully retracted side profile depth of only 48mm.

“The mounts had to be slim enough so that the screens could merge discreetly into the whole background,” explains Antoine Eisenstein, Orpheo’s managing director.

The Sir John Monash Centre took four years to construct, at a cost of AUD 100 million. The built started in 2014 and the memorial center officially opened on 24 April of this year.

The various display walls incorporate 450 LCD screens hanging from 96 Peerless-AV DS-VW 755S and 48 Peerless-AV DS-VW665 mounts. 110,000 people are expected to visit the center every year.
