  • Sarasota mall lands seven-screen CineBistro with eat-in theaters.

Westfield Southgate mall in Sarasota has landed a CineBistro — a dine-in movie theater that offers a one-stop-shop dinner-and-a-movie experience.

Southgate, which is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and Siesta Drive, said Monday that a seven-screen, 35,000-square-foot CineBistro will open in 2015. The auditoria will include reclining leather chairs with dining tables and full-service dining, as well as a lounge for those who'd prefer to dine or drink outside of the theater.

CineBistro is a concept from Birmingham, Ala.-based Cobb Theatres. Cobb recently announced it's opening a luxury dine-in theater at Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg. There are also CineBistro locations in Tampa's Hyde Park Village and Wesley Chapel. Cobb also operates Countryside 12 in Clearwater.

In both instances, the movie theaters represent aging malls fighting to stay relevant in a retail world that's in a state of flux. Retailers are struggling to figure out how to position their brick-and-mortar locations in the face of ecommerce. The retail developments that do succeed are those that cater to high-end shopping in a luxurious environment. In Sarasota, the stakes are especially high, with the brand-new $315 million Mall at University Town Center now open.

Movie theaters, like restaurants, are becoming staples in retail developments, as they're destination components that can bring foot traffic to the retail tenants in the mall.

"Cobb has a great track record of opening CinéBistro at various locations across the country, and we are very happy to have them join Westfield Southgate and our successful lineup of retail brands," Jim Ralston, general manager of Westfield Southgate, said in a statement.
