  • 8K restoration of 2001: A Space Odyssey for NHK 8K channel launch on Dec. 1

In a few days we wil see the culmination of a three decade research and development programme at Japanese National Broadcaster NHK, with the launch of the first permanent lineair 8K Channel, BS8K, on December 1st. BS is the Japanese Broadcast Satellite system.

The channel will air from ten in the morning till ten at night.

For the launch of BS8K classic science fiction spectacle 2001: A Space Odyssey was restored and scanned in 8K. The fifty year old movie has long been seen as at the summit of cinematic image quality, shot on 70mm filmstock. A second 70 mm classic, My Fair Lady, will be restored for screening on the channel from March 2019 onwards.

"On the BS8K channel on December 1st, a landmark film in cinematic history, the science-fiction epic "2001: A Space Odyssey" will be broadcast. Although many films were shot in 35mm, this film which was made half a century ago, was one of the few shot in 70mm, the highest quality available at the time. Although the quality of 70mm films is comparable to 8K, there are a limited number of venues where they can be shown, so it was hard to enjoy them in the original quality. NHK was the first in the world to request this film be converted to 8K. Warner Bros., which owns the film, scanned the original film negatives, repairing scratches and restoring the color, to convert it into 8K. The result of that is the power and beauty of the 70mm original is fully captured in 8K, and the many famous scenes become even more vivid, with the attention to detail of director Stanley Kubrick expressed in the exquisite images, creating the feeling of really being on a trip in space, allowing the film to be enjoyed for the first time at home and in other venues. We would like viewers to thoroughly enjoy this masterpiece of film history", Yukinori Kida, Executive Director of Broadcasting at NHK explains the choice for "2001: A Space Odyssey", as the opening movie for his landmark channel.

On top of the classic 70 millimeter movies BS8K will feature the mainstay of the first HD and later the 4K channels concerts, music and other arts. Imagery from NASA exploring the Earth out of space, and of course nature programming from the earth's surface. Examples of art featured will be art from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Vienna Philharmonic orchestra, and coverage of the art of Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai.

A dozen years ago NHK introduced the name Ultra High Definition TV for the international market, when it first started to demonstrate its Super Hi-Vision 8K  in The US and Europe. The CE industry ran with the label for its quarter Super Hi-Vison resolution TV sets. So, BS8K will be the world's first Ultra HD Television channel. By the inventors, NHK. That also invented and operated the only successful analog HD system and service Hi-Vision.

The Tokyo Olympics in 2020 will be broadcast in 8K.

On the same day NHL will also launch the BS4K channel. From December to January, it will show films from giants of Japanese cinema, including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, in 4K. "A wide selection of films including "Rashomon", "Ukigusa (Floating Weeds)" and "Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Ugetsu)", which are 35mm productions, have been remastered in 4K", Kida added.
