  • Lumiere Award for Panasonic's 4K HDR Short Film "The Festival of Up Helly Aa"

"The Festival of Up Helly Aa," won the Excellence Award in the UHD (Ultra High Definition) Category at the Lumiere Japan Awards 2018. Up Helly Aa is a Viking fire festival held every year in the Shetland Islands of northern Scotland, including a procession culminating in the burning of a galley ship. The short film captured heroic scenes of the fire festival and people's lives in this harsh, rugged environment utilizing the wide dynamic range unique to HDR.

According to the judges: "This short film brings out the best of HDR and has artistically captured the flames from the torches as well as the unique light shining off the metal Viking armor. It made us realize how HDR can truly express the real metallic feel of the armor, which is not a common use of HDR".

The short movie was produced by/for Panasonic and shot using Panasonic's VariCam and EVA1 cameras.

Shot in 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) Up Helly Aa received the Excellence Award in the UHD Category for its artistic expression and imaging quality. This is the third time Panasonic won the prize, in 2015 it won with "THE WORLD HERITAGE CROATIA -Echoes of choir in virgin forest and water-". Last year it won with "Carrying a Wish" in 2017.

Since 2011, the Lumiere Japan Awards have been presented annually by the Advanced Imaging Society, Japan Committee (AIS-J), the Japanese chapter of the Advanced Imaging Society, an international organization formed by industry professionals to enhance the arts. Like the previous year, the Lumiere Japan Awards 2018 were presented during Inter BEE (International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition) in Japan on November 14, 2018. A total of 17 works received awards in 4 categories recognizing achievement in 3D, UHD (4K), UHD (8K), and VR (Virtual Reality) content.

Winners of the Lumiere Japan Awards 2018 qualify for the Advanced Imaging Society's Creative Arts Awards to be held in the United States in January 2019, and Panasonic will be entering the English version of "the Festival of Up Helly Aa" for consideration.

The Making Of is almost as long the main movie.
