In anticipation of The Cinema Build KSA forum on April 14-15 in Riyadh Saudi Arabia's General Commission of Audiovisual Media (GCAM) CEO Bader Al-Zahrani told Arab News last month that: "GCAM is working toward achieving Quality of Life Program’s goal by opening 45 cinemas by 2020". According to the newsorganisation the Kingdom is set to have almost 350 cinemas with more than 2,500 screens creating more than 30,000 jobs. Other media report the schedule to complete the full 2500 screens is 2025.
Al-Zahrani continues: “The cinema sector in Saudi Arabia will see significant growth, especially with the commission’s efforts to promote national and foreign investment in the sector”.
Variety reports that the plan involves investments of $35 billion by 2020. The statement by the regulator referred to is inaccessible as the complete GCAM website is down.
The complete exhibition industry has to be rebuild after the 35 year ban on cinema's in Saudi Arabia ended last year.
