Blackmagic Design offers the new Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR, which the company describes as 'an advanced 8K DisplayPort monitoring solution with dual on screen scope overlays, HDR, 33 point 3D LUTs and monitor calibration that’s been specifically designed for the professional film and television market and to take advantage of a new generation of monitors such as the Pro Display XDR'. However with its 8K output, with 3D LUT support and calibration function using third party USB probes, could make it an interesting tool in 4K and particularly 8K Home Theaters. As current external LUT devices for HT use are currently limited to HD and 4K. Adding scaling to the display's native resolution and calibration to the mix.
Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR includes the same high quality 33 point 3D LUTs as used in the film industry. It's possible to calibrate the connected display by connecting a third party USB color probe and the Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR will analyze the monitor and generate a 3D LUT to correct for color differences between displays. Two independent 3D LUTs can be loaded and customers can select between them from the front panel.
The Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR will be available in Oct 2019 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for the relatively modest sum of US$1,295. However given it works with 8K and it is an SDI to DisplayPort scaler/convertor, it has Quad SDI 12G input, i.e. 4x4K, to take in 8K. For consumer sources this will require HDMI to 12G SDI conversion, and on top EDID management and HDCP 2.2 support. This most likely requires adding four HD Fury devices into the chain between source and the Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR.
So the Black Magic box is a clean and straight forward device, but the complete chain could become messy as one ads first HDCP management and then HDMI to SDI conversion. And perhaps even the new DisplayPort 8K connection to HDMI 2.1, if thats the ony input the display supports. On top of that the source's HDMI 2.1 8K output probaby need to be split in four 4K signals first.
So for now there is no straightforward 8K solution for HT, yet.
