The 85" 8K LCD monitor that has been on show for half a decade as part of the NHK SHV (Super HiVision) 8K Ultra HD demo in the IBC Future Zone, has finally reached maturity, ahead of the first trial broadcasts next year for the Rio Olympics. At the show I was told that the monitor was to become available next year, but now Sharp has said it will launch this professional monitor, the LV85001 on October 30. No announcements regarding international launch dates. The display is said to be priced around 16 million Yen, approximately €119,000 or $ 133,000.
The IGZO panel offers 77-78 percent of the exapnded Rec. 2020 color gamut.
NHK used two of these, one for a content showcase and a second unit to demonstrate its BBC-NHK Hybrid Log-Gamma High Dynamic Range system. Yes, BBC and NHK have teamed up on Metadata-free HDR.
The display looked ready, no bar patterns like the prototype I saw a few years ago.
