Sony's raved over videowall did not make a good showing at its second visit to the Rai exhibition center. In September Sony showed an 4K engineering sample, that looked quite good,except for the vertical line running across the righthand bottom corner area. This time the 4K by 8K, or two of the IBC walls side by side looked less impressive.
When I first walked upto the Sony booth it was showing advertising renderings on the left side and nothing on the right, and the eye was immediately drawn to the right hand side where all one sees was the individual tiles and the larger panels they make up. Once you have seen that you'll definitely see the tile structure and or the panel structure on not superbright content aswell.
Not only is the surface clearly not flat, each tile has a different shade of black and reflects light differently. Considering Sony is asking an hefty premium for its Microled display over regular 1.2mm pitch Directview LED Videowalls, it should show-of better than regualr LED displays.
Overall we saw a regression in wall set-up at ISE this year, so many direct view LED video wall displayed noticable edge between modules, or and or colordifferences between modules this year, it was shocking how lacking both physical alignement and calibration sometimes were. The past few years these issues semed to have become a thing of the past, but this year they made a strickling re-appearance.
It does not always look bad.
I did not see the new Sony $/€25K UST Laser-Phosphor projector there. The second generation that offer 2500 peak lumens over the 2000 of the past two years at half the cost, it might have been shown in a private room, but I was unable to confirm that. Fotunately I had seen it the first day at the open booth of UK distributor Maranta Vision.
The Dome had returned but this time not taking center stage but the back seat to the CLEDIS Wall. Equiped with four of the newly launched VPL-GTZ280s, it showed a planetarium show provided by Sky-skann.
