I assume once you add a dci server to the barco its about twice the cost of the sony with the sony server. how do the two compare PQ wise? <\q>
Mark if comparing both new the Sony would provide a savings but not double. Out of box the Sony ships as a complete 4k system nothing else needed. Beyond the initial price for a Barco 4k you would also have to add the cost of a lens, server, lamp.
Both deliver a very nice image. The biggest difference in spec between the two would be Sonys high contrast it leads the pack of all Dcinema projection offerings. Higher contrast in a cinema where ambient light exists might not benefit the movie experience however if placed in the home or any screening room able to control ambient lighting the Sonys contrast would be appreciated. Would Sonys higher contrast ensure a better image, contrast is only one parameter that makes up and image.
For 3D on the Sony you would still have to add a special lens. not super expensive though. <\q>
Sonys generally does not provide the 3D lens you have to go through RealD who will lease it. I believe it is a 5 year contract. If the projector is placed in a none commercial environment it may be possible to purchases Sonys version.
Sonys 3D is Passive and a Silver screen is required. It is rumored the Dolby 3D lens would become available for the 515 which would not require a silver screen. So far that is limited to the SRX320.
