  • “A very surprising truth about projectors comparisons”

I doing Home Cinema for over 30 years and since over 40 years I shot in 3D my stills.

From first VHS video tapes that had surprisingly stereo sound that contains the Dolby Surround projected with a
7” CRT Sony Front Projector in many steps to todays in my case a Barco 6P Laser 4K DLP that I had a lot of Projectors in my live and
    test them.

I ironically say always “the hunt for the best image will be never over” but there is also trues in this.

There was a lot of discussion what is the best projector and this discussion will never ends.
True is here there is not any best projector the best projector is this one that you can afford and this one that match perfect with your needs and requests.

For me I found the answer in my Barco Thor 6P Laser Pr. that I call the best Projector in the World “IF” this Projector is well setup.
To many sample’s I read or know where I say that it was a shame how such a Projector was setup from People that had not any clue what they are doing and the result can be that
this very complicate Projector not performing well and this is a big shame.

I compare it to a Formula One car with 1000 horse power in the hand of a 18 years old driving beginner.

I did lately some tests and I have found a hug surprise that change my thinking about projector compare a lot.

The situation was some days ago when I got 2 visitors that like to see my Sony VW760 (885 in US) and compare this Pr. to the Barco Thor.
Of course this was a very unfair compare as depends in which country you are and how you ask the Barco can cost about 15 times as much as the Sony but this was not the point for my post.

The point was that I show first 15 min. of Passengers UHD Disc with the Sony and switch than to the Barco and repeat the first 15 min. from this movie.
Next Part of this test was opposite I start with the Barco and show there the first 10 Min. from Dunkirk UHD Disc and after I switch to the Sony and show again the first 10 min. from this movie.

So this was NOT a normally AB compare where you see “klick one Projector” and “klick again the other one” best with a still image that you can compare very nice and easy.
In this long time compare and something comes up that shock us all together.

During the demo when I project with the Barco the first 10 min. of Dunkirk I think to myself Brightness looks a bit weak and as I play with the Laser power a lot up and down I check the laser setting level from the Barco and increase it from 48% to 56% Laser power to make the picture a bit more bright.
I was confused as nothing visible change in the picture at the screen and then I realize that not the Barco was projecting the picture it was the Sony!
Bum this was a big surprise!
My visitors also believe the Barco was running and when I tell him that this was not the Barco it was the Sony he cannot believe it same as me.

So both of us was a bit shocked as we never expect this.

So what we learn from this?
Well we learn that how we see an image is not fixed!
Our brain /eye adopt to different picture quality’s very easy after 5 to 10 lately after 15 min.

May you have your own experience and may you can agree to the following because you had similar experience.

I like to re watch the movie  “One Night at McCool” some 4 weeks ago.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Night_at_McCool%27s
But this movie was at least in Germany not available in HD only my old DVD was there.
This DVD was at the DVD time one of the reference picture quality DVDs.
So I watch for the first time since many many years a DVD again.
Also the first DVD I ever watch with the Barco and you know what happen?
First I say oh my good such a bad picture quality in the first seconds.
After 5 min. it gets better and after 15 min. I do not rate the picture quality anymore as bad I rate it in the beginning!
I adopt very well to this picture quality and found it ok.
My family see it also like this.

This and other similar experiences tells me that our brain/eye adopt a lot to different picture quality’s when you watch it at least 15 min. long.

When you have a Red Cyan 3D Glasses I recommend to you do a test that will convince you that what I write is right.
Put this glasses on and were it for at last 20 min.
Don’t take them off for 20 min. during you wear it when you exposed to normally light condition (so not in the dark as it will not good work there).
Than take it off after about 20 min. and cover your right eye with your hand and you will be amazed to see what you then will see.
Than cover your left eye with your hand and see what you will see.

Don’t be worry your brain just adopt to the 3d glasses and to the different color.
When you take it off your brain need some 5 to 10 min. to bring the normally color you see back so this test is not hurt your eyes otherwise this glasses will be not
    at the market.

    So back to our compare.
Our eye/brain adopt so easy to different picture quality’s.
Later we did some AB compare so klick the Barco klick the Sony both with still images from some very nice good looking sequences from the best UHDs on the market so far.
Any you know what here you can see easy the difference both Projectors have.

For me this was a new discovery and this will change in some way my thinking of comparing Projectors or Displays as I know that differences in a AB compare are can be huge but in a running movie after some 15 min. this differences can be shrink so much as our Brain/Eye adopt so much that it will be hard to detect any difference.

It looks like our eye/brain adopt very good to color sharpness and brightness and black level.

So does above mean a cheaper Projector is as good as a very expensive one or at the end you cannot see the difference?
    Answer a clear NO.
But also true is that our eye/brain adopt to a not so good picture at least in some range between a good and a super good Projector.
If quality distance it too big than it have may a different results.

It also means that a direct AB compare with a still picture from a good perfect UHD Disc is may less important to rate and you should be focus more on a 15 Min. long Projector A and same content 15 min. with Projector B compare when you do next time a projector compare.

For me I will focus on this and do in future beside the A to B with still picture on top the long time each projector 15 min. with same content compare to give me a more
    practical compare result.

Very interesting, Wolfgang. I had a meet at my house a month and a half ago ,very nerve racking because the stack 5000 set up is far from consistent when switching inputs one projector always handshakes first and the lag can be half a second to a minute. Fortunately, it seemed to settle into about 15 seconds during the get together with 15 to twenty people in the theater at a time.. The second projector coming up increased the light by 100% and provided a demo as to why I chose the path I did without having to actually mute a projector. It was unfair really though based on what you have noted since I doubt anyone would have chosen a single  projector under this demonstration scenario but had I waited 15 minutes between them back and forth It might have been quite different.

It was fun to read from you today here as we during lunch talk about your visit some time ago.

      You know why?
Than see this picture and you understand.
We say that we do not have this soon anymore and how good it was for some lunch and dinner .

I is very nice that we are adopt to different Quality’s very good.

I tell you one more thing I have try.
I put my 77" LG 4K OLED (the 2016 model the only one that can do still 3D and Dolby Vision!) from the place I had before to the end of my bed.
There I watch movies in 1 times the picture wide and that is like it was in my cinema.
The infinity back is something really nice to have and the rest of the picture looks also very nice so why I decide to move it back to the original position after a good week and some movies in 2D as well in 4K Dolby Vision?

Well picture in 16:9 is too big.
2.35 Format looks fine but 16:9 is too large.
3D not working so good anymore as viewing angle gets strong and this LG 3D system are a bit sensitive about to strong angels in 3D.
Also that I not can look outside the bed.
I see when the TV is off always a big black area and this is not nice.
So this is why I put it back.
But it was a nice experiment and give me some good feedback.
So now I know how important is to have an infinity back.

I hope I can get some improvement in Black visibility with my new V6 screen that will be up and running within the next 2 weeks if everything is going well see the Barco Thor thread.
