  • New Sony 4K very small DCI Projector

Sony just announced in China a new small Laser DCI 4K Pr. the R608 see some pictures down.

Looks like it’s a 8000 Lumen Laser 4K that looks almost as a Sony VW 5000 just a bit higher.
It will have likely good 8000 Lumen at 10.000:1 cr. can do HDR and full DCI Color.

Looks like Sony use there the same optic that was in the VW5000 inside.
Also very interesting to see there 2 HDMI Inputs ………..

I hope it has at least 10,000 lumens, we will see. Curious if it will use their Digital Cinema Server XCT-S10 or if it will have an internal IMS.

Well previous generations were around the 7/8K lumens and double that at 15K lumens. So 10K lumens would suggest they do away with the model differentiation, or might offer a 20K lumens model, previously Sony's limit for its big Xenon machines. But a level one finds in commercial single chip DLP projectors. All thanks to Laser-phosphor light sources.of cours eSony Cinema would need better colors so would get less lumens out of same lasers.

I doubt as normally Sony had always in the part number of the pr. the lumen inside see for sample
VW5000 ist 5000 lumen for home cinema.

        R 515 DCI pr. is 15.000 lumen
        R 815 DCI pr. is 15.000 lumen

I am sure the R 608 will be 8000 lumen.
But this is at full DCI colors!
Compare it to the Sony VW5000 when you switch the DCI filter inside you still not have 100% DCI color and lumen is lower than 4000 lumen for sure.
When I remember right I found around 3700 lumen with the filter in place.

So compare this now with a pr. that can do full DCI color with 8000 lumen it is more than double a 5000 can do with on top full DCI color.
So it looks Sony have done some work with the laser to get this full DCI color.

We will see what Sony will do with this new pr. in future……….
I have some idea but I do not like to talk about it

This will use the consumer chip not the cinema chip.

Question, or confirmed fact? What is the difference between the two chips?

It must be considerably cheaper than the 25K lumens RGB Christie, the CP4325, to compete?

                  Not sure about it.
The optic they use in the R608 had a big shift possible with the small consumer LCOS 4K Chips so when they give up a bit of this shift range this optic can be working with the bigger LCOS 4K Chips as well.

But it will be not a surprise if they use this VW 5000 optics and they will use the same chips the 5000 have.
If they can cool it down with this much higher lumen why they have to put the bigger LCOS 4K Chips inside?

Looks like this new Pr. will have the small 0,7" LCOS chips inside!

If so it is the first DCI Pr. that had this small 4K chips inside we know from the home cinema models.
With the big chips that was used in the other Sony DCI Pr. that had 1,48" it will be not possible to use the lens they have used for the R608.

                      I wasn't here for while....good catch Wolfgang.
You think Sony will bring this with a Short Throw Option to?
                      The 870 got this Feature.
What Price range you exept, under or over the Sony 5000?

For Chinese exhibition this probably needs to be below the premium HT price of the VW5000. The upper limit is also found in the Christie RGB competition pricing. Are any of these aside from the CP4325 shipping already?

Yes I see it as I have ask some questions in my Barco Thor Thread to you some time ago but never get an answer.

I am not sure but as laser power is still expensive and will be expensive for some longer time.
So my prediction was that the 5000 successor will be a bit more expensive than the 5000.
In best case it will be about the same.
The DCI R 608 version must be a cheap version and I will be not surprised to see this pr. below other cheap DCI pr.
Likely cheaper than a 5000 successor.

Any idea if this model is optimized to beat the current Sony 5000? Any idea on release date, cost?

I'm going to buy a PJ in the next 3-4 months - wonder if this will be an option?

                            Thanks

                              Hi Jeff

                              welcome to the forum.

It is a bit too early to talk about it but I will share what I can post.

First I am interested in this 5000 successor as well.

My Barco Thor perform very good likely the best Pr. so far on the market that money can buy till
Christie come with their Infinity Cr. Pr. mid next year.
But this will be something for Billionaires.

The only difference to my Barco Thor is the Christie will do infinity on off the Barco Thor have only good 6000:1 that is good but less good than infinity.
But my Barco had some advantage over the Christie.
It can do better 3D and this is "for me" a very important point.
3D Shutter glasses reduce the cr. to about 5000:1.
I had more than this with the Barco and infinity cr. for 3D material is gone with the Christie.
Also it soften the image and you not see any more 4K resolution by wearing a shutter 3D glasses.
My Barco Thor use 6P Laser and 3D glasses that not decrease cr. and not decrease visible resolution.

As the Barco Thor do a perfect 3D and the Christie cannot do such a perfect 3D I cannot sale my Thor so I may end up what I had for many years.
                              2 projectors!
One for all what is 3D one for all what is 2D.

Remember I was the first in the word with a Sony VW 5000 but when I see the picture the Barco Thor side by side with the 5000 for many months I decide to sale it to my friend and he is still very very happy with it.
And yes he is right the Sony 5000 is one of the best home cinema pr. money can buy.
BTW he measured cr. no drop!

The 5000 successor will have more lumen a better cr. on off contrast ratio and will be likely but not for sure a bit more expensive than the 5000.
My guess is it will have 7000 to 8000 lumen near 20.000:1 native cr. and may near 100% DCI color without any filter.
On top they will offer laser diming and may some other things that improve the cr. any further.
I think it will be hit in about 10 months from now.

But all this is not 100% safe until Sony will tell us how the 5000 successor will be looking.

                              Wolfgang
