Non-MPEG video compression start-up V-Nova, known for enabling mobile SD and HD service distribution. That also won a 4K contribution compression-decompression deal with Eutelsat/Rai, and the supply of its Perseus codec for Sky Italia's new 4K IPTV service it is present in the complete broadcast chain.
V-Nova Ltd., commisioned Dr William Cooper of informitv an independent consultancy to evaluate its PERSEUS video compression technology.
The evaluation methodology designed and carried out by informitv combines qualitative and quantitative examinations of sample material encoded using V-Nova PERSEUS. All the HD and 4K UHD tests were performed live on P.Link 4K, V-Nova’s contribution encoder and decoder solution already used for live coverage of the El Clasico football match and selected by Eutelsat for coverage of the European football championships in 4K UHD.
The results demonstrate that V-Nova PERSEUS compression is visually lossless for video contribution at compelling operating points:
1080i25 at 75 Mbps
1080p50 at 150 Mbps
2160p50 at 200 Mbps
The evaluations also show that High Dynamic Range images encoded with V-Nova PERSEUS deliver higher fidelity output without any compression overhead. Furthermore, 8K UHD-2 format images of 7680×4320 pixels at 48 bits per pixel were visually lossless at 40:1 compression, which is equivalent to the data rate of uncompressed high-definition video, well about a third more 4Gbit/s with 1080P@50/60's 3Gbit/s.
“We were amazed by the claims for V-Nova PERSEUS but the results of our rigorous evaluations speak for themselves,” said Dr William Cooper of informitv. “V-Nova PERSEUS compression proved visually lossless for ultra-high-definition production applications at impressively low data rates, as confirmed by objective measurements. V-Nova can also deliver 4K High Dynamic Range video today and V-Nova PERSEUS compression is already 8K ready.”
