  • IBC: Big Screen to Experience High Dynamic Range

For the first time, High Dynamic Range projection will be featured and provided by long-term supporters, Dolby Laboratories. In addition Dolby Atmos immersive audio will be featured again powered by QSC audio. At the IBC2016 Big Screen Experience conference stream, which kicks off on the 9 September, in Amsterdam in the RAI Auditorium.

The Big Screen Experience conference stream will focus on the wide gamut of key developments that affect the art, science and business of the motion-picture sector from production through to exhibition. The stream offers an editorially-led programme that is set up as a state-of-the-art cinema - this important aspect enables the many salient topics of the programme to be directly experienced as well as academically discussed.

Of the four-day conference, the Friday and Saturday will focus more towards the capture end of the content-supply-chain and we will examine new tools from motion capture to lightfield imaging. The culmination will be a masterclass from visual effects guru, Kevin Baillie, on the application of virtual sets in productions such as Robert Zemeckis’ and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s, ‘The Walk’. The Sunday and Monday will, amongst other topics, examine experiential innovation (such as High Dynamic Range, Wide Colour, Immersive Audio and High Frame Rate) as well as business innovations such as in marketing and analytics—always asking the key question on the mouths of film distributors and cinema operators: what does all this mean for my ROI?

“With the digital transition behind us, the industry is currently taking stock and examining its future direction. Digital is enabling new ways to shoot movies, capture performance, and manipulate in post-production elements that were otherwise locked in. What does it mean for story-tellers that Virtual Reality is knocking on the movie industry’s door? New levels of immersion are on offer but which will become part of tomorrow’s cinema? And digital is now enabling the distributor, advertiser, and cinema operator access to big data and sophisticated analytics so that digital marketing might too play its role in driving ROI,” said Julian Pinn, consulting Executive Producer, IBC Big Screen Experience.

The Big Screen Experience is part of the overall conference entitled “Transformation in the Digital Era: Leadership, strategy and creativity in media and entertainment”, which sees more than 300 Executives sharing insights on key issues at the heart of the entertainment, media and technology sectors.

Besides Dolby Vision and the big pair of Christie build RGB Laser projectors with the dual stage DMDs to create the 1 million to one on-off contrast, it will also accomodate director Ang Lee whose upcoming Billy Lynn movie will not only be in 3D but also a variety of framerates upto 120 frames per second. Therefor this year the IBC Big Screen Auditorium this year will be the most complex installation ever, featuring HDR and HFR 4K 3D laser projection and immersive audio. With a total of 5 projectors, the two projection head Dolby Projection system and the pair of Christie Mirage D4KLH60 High Frame Rate 6P laser-illuminated 4K projectors.

A year of first, for the very first time, the Auditorium will be featuring a pair of Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range 6P laser-illuminated 4K projectors capable of 31 fL (108 nits) in 2D and 14 fL (48 nits) in 3D with an unrivaled projected contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and able to support all of today's DCI frame rates. Also for the first time, the Auditorium will feature a pair of Christie Mirage D4KLH60 High Frame Rate 6P laser-illuminated 4K projectors capable of an unrivaled projected specification of 4096 x 2160, 120 fps, 3D. Whilst the maximum is 12 laser modules per projector, Christie will use 9 per projector for IBC in order to achieve 28 fL (96 nits) in Dolby 3D—which is approximately 5 times bright than a standard cinema setup.

And as a third first: there's the 7th Sense Design Delta Media Server, capable of playing content at 120 fps, 4K, 3D as demanded by Mr Ang Lee, who will be previewing clips to the delegates of his latest work, 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' as part of his IBC Big Screen Keynote presentation.

Harkness Screens is providing a 17.00m wide x 6.69m high Matt Plus screen featuring their 4K Digital Perforation Pattern with its reduced moiré fringing and improved sound transmission.

The audio setup this year will be Dolby Atmos immersive audio, powered by QSC, and designed and built by a collaboration between Dolby, QSC and Terry Nelson of IBC's Technical Resources. The QSC stage system is in L-C-R configuration but uses a double centre channel array for greater headroom.

The LFE channel also features large headroom and comprises two line arrays of four twin 18" cabinets each. The arrays also use 'delay shading' to electronically steer the LF into the audience for a more controlled response.

The time-aligned surround channels are augmented for Dolby Atmos with overhead speaker arrays, extra 'wide channels' to provide for a smooth continuation from the screen to the room, and bass-management to two additional rear twin 18" subwoofer systems.

The Surround 5.1 and 7.1 sources are from a selection of Dolby CP750 and Dolby DMA8+ processors that are patched into a Cadac CDC8 digital console to allow for fast selection of sources and total control. The Dolby Atmos signal is controlled by the Dolby CP850 processor and routed via AES-67 to the Q-SYS digital network system and DSP technology with a Core 500i central controller and DPA networked amplifiers located as close to the loudspeakers as possible.

Using 128 mixing console channels, 46 surround loudspeakers and 51.4 kW in 8 ohms of audio amplification and almost 1000 meters of speaker cables to fit the very large but immersive room.
