Ang Lee to Deliver Keynote Address at IBC2016 Conference's Big Screen Experience

Multi-Academy-Award-winning Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi) is to deliver his visionary Keynote address on Monday 12 September at the IBC2016 Conference in Amsterdam as part of the IBC Big Screen Experience. Ang Lee has been presenting his current High Frame Rate, 120 frames per second, and High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut production "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" in keynotes at several tradeshows this year, and will now cross the pond to address an international audience, on the International Broadcasting Convention's Digital Cinema day.

For over two decades, Ang Lee has shown true mastery in utilising cutting-edge science and cinematographic techniques towards his creation of some of the very finest works of cinematic story-telling art.”

Ang Lee’s Keynote will set in the context of his latest work, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016). The revolutionary new cinematographic technique utilised not only unlocks a new level of story-telling power and emotional connection with the on-screen characters but offers greater control over preserving artistic integrity over the increasing range of delivery formats both within cinema and to the wider electronic entertainment market.

The IBC Big Screen Experience is at the heart of the IBC2016 Conference where more than 300 speakers are expected to attend to share insights on key issues at the heart of the entertainment, media and technology sector under the headline conference theme, Transformation in the “Digital Era: Leadership, Strategy and Creativity in Media and Entertainment.”

No details were provided, but there will be Dolby Vision HDR with Christie projection,as previously reported, so they better make sure this is the latest greatest 120FPS version;-) IBC: Big Screen to Experience High Dynamic Range.

Christie has been the sole projection sponsor for years now, Barco dropped out years ago after the first years of DCi breaking into the market, when going digital was an important subject at the conference. Even being absent from the show for a few years as well, after selling the cable business to SA. And dropping the reference/broadcast monitors before that. Returning with control room set-ups a number of years ago.

Julian Pinn: "This year, the Big Screen will be equipped with a pair of 6P laser-illuminated Dolby Vision HDR projectors, a pair of 6P laser-illuminated Christie Mirage HFR projectors, a 7th Sense Design HFR server, Dolby 3D, a Harkness white screen, and a QSC-powered Dolby Atmos immersive audio sound system—all installed and set up especially for the IBC Big Screen Experience conference."

The IBC2016 International Honour for Excellence will be presented to Director Mr Ang Lee. The International Honour for Excellence is the highest award IBC bestows.

Ang Lee was born in Taiwan, but studied theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and then film at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. In his career he has won two Best Director Oscars and has been nominated twice more. Life of Pi was the first 3D movie to win the Oscar for Best Director.

“The International Honour for Excellence goes to an individual who has made a significant and valuable contribution to our industry, combining technology and creativity to achieve remarkable ends,” said Michael Crimp, CEO of IBC. “It is hugely appropriate we make this award to Ang Lee, a director who has harnessed technology in the service of great story-telling.”



Ang Lee himself underlined that view. “In the past few years, I have come strongly to believe that new technology will upgrade filmmaking in terms of story-telling,” he said. “I made Life of Pi in 3D not just to immerse the audience in the world on screen, but as a way of adding depth to the characters and the ideas which move them.

“In my upcoming film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the use of high frame rate and high dynamic range will provide, I hope, a unique opportunity to feel the realities of war and peace through the protagonist’s eyes.

“IBC has done so much to bring together new technology and old-fashioned creativity,” he added. “I am delighted to be part of this exciting dialogue, and I am honoured to receive this award. Thank you.”

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Wal, the 4K 120 Frames per Second 3D title will premiere this October during the New York Film Festival, in a purposely equiped theater that can handle the high frame rate and 3D.

As well as receiving the International Honour for Excellence, Ang Lee will also present a keynote address as part of the IBC Conference. His presentation, which will include illustrations from his latest movie, will take place in the Auditorium on Monday 12 September at 10:00.

Previous winners of the IHFE Award include: Directors James Cameron and Sir Peter Jackson, Olympic Broadcasting Services and Sir David Attenborough.

The IBC Awards Ceremony takes place on Sunday 11 September at 18.30, and will include reviews of Ang Lee’s current and previous work, as well as a number of other highlights. Entry is free to all IBC visitors but space is limited.
