  • Sony to market Backlight Master Drive in ZD9 series HDR TVs

The Backlight Master Drive technology shown by Sony as a prototype at CES in January. The prototype was demoed in a display with a peak brightness of 4000 nits, but Sony has not yet provided info on the ZD9 65" and 75" TVs peak brightness levels.

The Backlight Master Drive technology provides an unspeficified, but large number of led backlight zones. The individual LEDs are individually addressable, with most Full Array Led Display backlight groupinging LEDs into zones. This should allow for greater intra-image contrast, with a dark led next to an lit led. The new backlight also is said to redirect energy from unused LEDs/zones to bright LEDs/zones to offer the high peak-brightness required for HDR. The blacks should also be better.

The ZD9 series offers two sizes, 65" and 75", also features a new processor and algorithm, the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme. This processor Sony claims offers 40% more power that the X1 processor in the current XD93/94. Expanding of SDR content is also offered. Internal processing will be at 14 bits, to allow for precise mapping, and limited banding. The 65" will have an MSRP of €5000,-, the 75" will be €8000,-. No final date is provided, but according to Sony Europe they should be available next month.

Yes, that was what I thought, considering the CES 2012 CLED TV took 4,5 years to come to market, and not even as a single body display, but a modular commercial one. So given the emphasis placed on it being a pure technology demo, I was surprised aswell. Of course the question is how bright will it be, 1200, 1500, more or less?

I see Engadget has a report from a Sony USA presentation, US designation will be Z series, and the 65" will be $7K, and the 75" $10K. Now if Sony would indeed market that 100" unit used in the presentation, you would be happy, since LG is keeping the OLEDs down to 77".

Make it 8K and Sony can jump on the Olympics Super HiVision bandwagon.
