  • 8K Super Hi-Vision On Air, in time for Rio Olympics

Following two decades of research and development, since 1995, Super Hi-Vision Japan's national broadcaster NHK's 8K channel is now On Air. This week the satellite channel is running tests ahead of NHK's 130 Hours of 8K coverage of the Rio Olympics, starting this week-end. NHK has been demonstrating links or broadcast over various medium, like fiber, satellite and even terrestrial at international and its own technology exhibitions and open houses, but this will be the first time an actual current event is not only captured in 8K, but will also be broadcast like a direct to home broadcast to regular households..

This involves a prototype receiver NHK and an 8K LCD TV. The various generations of prototypes it has been showing with Sharp for a number of years. With Sharp launching a commercially available product at the end of October last year. Wich we saw at the ISE show in Amsterdam this February.

As there are little to none receivers available and the Sharp 85" 8K LCD TV costing the equivalent €119K/$129K NHK has constructed a demonstration Theater in both Tokyo and Osaka with free admission to the public.

1 - 5 Aug. 2016 Tokyo 8K Theater of Super Hi - Vision Test Broadcasting (admission free)
    6 - 14 Aug. 2016 Osaka 8K Theater of RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES (pre-registration or admission free)
    6 - 22 Aug. 2016 Tokyo 8K Theater of RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES (pre-registration or admission free)

And several other locations, including all NHK station locations.

    The schedule in Japanese.

The receiver was shown at NHK's last open house event:

Aswell as the whole end-user ecosystem of 3224MHz Compatible Devices for the in home or in multi-dwelling-unit complexes distribution of Super Hi-Vision as the 8K signals require more bandwidth than regular satelite or cable tv signals.

TV GLOBO's live 8K terrestrial broadcast trial provided an advanced super-high definition experience for viewers. NEC contributed its sophisticated digital broadcasting transmission technology and industry know-how that it has accumulated through a history of valuable field experience.

According to Tooru Watanabe, General Manager, Broadcast and Media Division at NEC Corporation "NEC is dedicated to the development of a broad range of advanced social infrastructure solutions. This opportunity enables NEC to reinforce its efforts towards the expansion of next generation broadcasting services beyond Full HD and well into the future".

Though NEC does not specify what equipment it supplied, the vendor makes both transmitters and associated signal processing equipment, aswell as MPEG HEVC video compressors.
