Following two decades of research and development, since 1995, Super Hi-Vision Japan's national broadcaster NHK's 8K channel is now On Air. This week the satellite channel is running tests ahead of NHK's 130 Hours of 8K coverage of the Rio Olympics, starting this week-end. NHK has been demonstrating links or broadcast over various medium, like fiber, satellite and even terrestrial at international and its own technology exhibitions and open houses, but this will be the first time an actual current event is not only captured in 8K, but will also be broadcast like a direct to home broadcast to regular households..
This involves a prototype receiver NHK and an 8K LCD TV. The various generations of prototypes it has been showing with Sharp for a number of years. With Sharp launching a commercially available product at the end of October last year. Wich we saw at the ISE show in Amsterdam this February.
As there are little to none receivers available and the Sharp 85" 8K LCD TV costing the equivalent €119K/$129K NHK has constructed a demonstration Theater in both Tokyo and Osaka with free admission to the public.
