  • Qumi turns 8 and gets 1080P

The portable LED projector has finally grown up, now a second manufacturer has - finally - introduced 1080P imaging to the category. Delta Electronics' projector brand Vivitek, is launching its Qumi 8, with 1080P. It is to sit atop of the range of mini projectors with the Qumi 3, 5 and 7 providing WXGA and lower lumens output. The Qumi Q8 will be available in white or black from October 2016 at a list price of €999,- or £849 including VAT with a warranty of 3 years.

Last year LG blazed the trail with several versions of its PF1500 that claimed 1400 lumens, but delivered between 700 and 1000+ lumens depending on the version and unit variation, a break through for RGB LED light output. The Qumi is rated at a 1000 lumens so expect it to compete with the less powerfull EU version of the LG PF 1500, or the PF 1000 ultra short throw version with a built in mirror, that is also rated at 1000 lumens.

"Our Qumi family continues to grow to cater for the differing needs and requirements of users who want a portable projector that delivers outstanding image quality. With the Qumi Q8, not only does it excel from a performance perspective, but it also set new standards for portability and connectivity options, aligned with the reliability and ease of use that defines all Vivitek's solutions", Holger Graeff, General Manager EMEA at Vivitek, said in a statement announcing the Qumi 8's launch.

Like the other Qumi's it is tiny, just 190 x 114 x 43 mm (D x W x H) and weighs only 621g. Vivitek is correct when it says that the Qumi Q8 is among one of the world's smallest native 1080p pocket projectors, great for smaller screens and dark rooms or casual viewing at any wall that takes your fancy.

"the Qumi Q8 makes it easy to gather with friends and enjoy time spent in front of the big screen, or for private time watching a movie. When the film is over, the Qumi Q8 can be carried around easily and stored away conveniently".

Viviteks claims the Qumi8 has an output of 1000 lumens, with its LED lightsource lasting 30,000 hours, is able to focus upto a screensize of 120" diagonal. It should have an on-off contrast ratio of 30,000:1 if that is true Vivitek must have implemented a very innovative and well performing LED dimming controller technology.

As a true Road Warrior, and collaboration tool the Qumi8 has plenty wireless and wired inputs. Its integrated Wi-Fi enables the Qumi Q8 to wirelessly mirror mobile devices so mobile content can be enjoyed by the whole group at the same time. There's also the USB flash drive connector or the on board memory to effortlessly display entertainment ranging from documents, photos and movies without the need to connect to a PC or Blu-Ray player. And of course HDMI and MHL.

The touch-sensitive keypad with illuminated backlit controls provide intuitive control. Set up has been simplified with the vertical keystone correction being automatic combined with a manual horizontal keystone adjustment function for this pocket size projector.
