    Sony SRX R515P 4K projector

The Sony comes delivered as a full system which includes Lens, projector, Server, Cart, UPS and 15" control panel.
Setting up a Dcinema system can be intimidating but because the Sony is a complete proprietary system it makes for easy setup no third party component updates or marriage of IMBs needed.
The 515 proves easy to use as well. While the GUI is very basic at this time it offers all the important features needed. If familiar with D cinema operations it will not take long learning the  keystrokes needed for your very first screening.
Instead of using Xenon lamps the Sony 515 uses 6 HPM lamps filtered to meet DCI color spec each with a 3000 hour life span.
The Sony 515 is very flexible allowing you to program the lamps in any configuration of choice. Run 1, 2 or 4 or all 6 depending on screen size. There is also a lamp power setting with a range from 80% to 100% and a lamp brightness choice of 1, 2, or 3. This lamp flexibility makes the Sony 515 not only ideal for full size commercial cinemas but also smaller screening or production rooms.
I saw the Sony 515 on an 11 foot wide scope screen running one lamp at 80% power #1 brightness power. At that screen size very little to no heat output with 5 spare lamps it is like a cat with 6 life's making this the most cost efficient full featured Dcinema projector on the market.

The 515s large aperture F2.5 lens is made of ELD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass to create a super fine pitch 4K image. Below is an image of Sony's 4k lens side by side with the competitors 2k optics used throughout its 4k platform. Sony is the only 4k cinema projector utilizing a true 4k lens. Combined with its electronic path the Sony delivers a true 4k image from input to the screen.

Just slide the lens in place and lock the lever. Very easy.

    Lens installed.

The SRX 515 features an improved SXRD optical engine. Sony claims a contrast ratio of 8000:1 and they deliver. I measured 8455:1 with 6 lamps illuminated using a Minolta T-10. A new record for the Dcinema arena  where 2000:1 is standard. Commercial Cinemas are required by law to leave some lights on. This ambient lighting can be damaging to image contrast therefore any number beyond 2000:1 may go unnoticed but feedback from movie goers and critics who have attended Sony equipped cinemas have praised the 515s image quality proving once again old standards are meant to be broken.

The quality of the lens and other optical elements is an often underrated factor in overall projector performance. Very high quality lenses for high resolution and contrast, better combined as MTF over a broad range of spatial frequency, can be very expensive, especially for low volume applications. Sony could have the best lenses for DCI projectors, at least for some models like the 515. DCI DLP projectors use lenses from several manufacturers. They all have to meet the minimum performance standard set by TI, but some are better than others. Minolta seems to have the best reputation, but whether they have the best performance is only anecdotal and depends on the focal length. Until we get the MTF curves from the lens manufacturers, which is unlikely to happen, most information is unreliable. The best current indicator of quality is probably the size of the glass and the number of elements.

2D lens quality is outstanding. The zoom ratio is very large with no chroma aberration at ether extreme. The projectors convergence is excellent as well, however if ever the need to correct the registration it is done electronically via the menu shifting any one of the R G or B panels with independent memory for both 2D and 3D.
Contrast shuts down your pupil between full fades watching content with no light spill on side walls. Masking/blanking is black not grey. Image is very thick and rich on screen.
I will have some experience with Sony's 3D lens right after the holiday. I am looking forward to comparing Sony's 3D which displays both left and right eye images at the same time to DLP triple flash.

Welcome to the forum, yes ready to go, requires the 3D lens of course. The SRX 515 will handle the following consumer 3D formats.

Sony 3D lens with RealD filters and lens change table are on their way.
Sony has a Dolby 3D lens in the works for the SRX515 currently only available over seas for the SRX320.

Sonys 3D lens with Filters and lens change table have arrived. The lens is first class and setup was very easy. The lens splits the picture into two images overlapping each other on the screen one for Right Eye one for Left Eye. Unlike DLP based cinema projectors "triple flash" there is no flicker and I can tell you Sonys 3D method is superior and the best Cinema 3D I have experienced. I was able to compare Sonys 3D side by side with a 4k TI based projector switching between both an active and Passive 3D system.
Also worth mentioning very little light loss with Sonys 3D method.
The Sony split lens can also be used for screening 2D titles just swing the polarizing filters out of the way from the light path they are not needed when projecting 2D.
"Move Image Technology" offers an automated sled that mounts to the lens for Cinemas who prefer to leave the 3D lens in place for both 3D and 2D screenings.
Mechanical and software adjustments allow for perfect alignment of the two images over lapping each other. The results provide a very bright and punchy image.
                  Well done Sony.

Sony SRX 515 in "Moving Image Technology" booth at CinemaCon 2014.

"Moving Image Technology" demoed their motorized filter sled for Sony's 3D split lens for cinemas leaving the 3D lens in place for both 2D /3D screenings.

The sled mounts direct to the 3D lens, very clever.

Latest software version 1.30.2 has enabled scaling to the HDMI input when in 3d mode using the 3D lens.

I have "Moving Image Technologies"  XLS mover on its way, this will allow those who want to bypass changing lens between 2D/3D formats to leave the 3D lens in place full time. The XLS mover automates the movement  of the polarized filters in and out of place between 2d/3d screenings with the 3D lens in place. Sonys 3D lens is very good quality, precise engineering, when setup properly can be left in place for both 2D & 3D movies without sacrificing image quality for 2D.
