  • Dolby Atmos Digital system architecture...Let's Decypher it here.

I have been knee high trying to understand the Dolby Atmos architecture, and I know there are some serious minds here, maybe someone can help.

This is the back of the Atmos processor:
The Dolby Atmos Connect jacks output uses Blu-link architecture.

Atmos warning to forum members with a DCI system here: Resistance is futile, you will own a CP850 sooner than you think. The Gravity track wraps sounds around your head and Pans sound out of the screen through your gut (you feel it going in and coming out), this while a full blown hollophonic canopy of sound is going on ( the 11.1 Atmos base). It is insane, specially when coupled with a good quality polarizer and sony passive Bravia glasses, the 3-D images are choreographed. Also the D-Box cinema kit while pricey is the final ingredient for the ultimate 4-D DCI Theater- I have all the info on that one as well for another thread.

There are three products at the moment that can be connected to Dolby Atmos Connect connectors:

    1) The Dolby Atmos Interface DAC3201 (their multichannel dac) It is ok but limited.

    2) The BSS LONDON BLU-800 Signal Processor with Digital Audio Bus and CobraNet
-Configuration, Control and Monitoring from HiQnet London Architect software. We will deal with that later.

    3) The new DRIVE CORE Crown series of amplifiers. Also software controllable. Here I need help.
So you can network the amplifiers for the theater via cat 6 and control with HiQnet London Architect software.

I will continue this thread but my question at the moment is:

Assuming a 22 loudspeaker channel system with the 3 Left Center Right speakers being 3-way, looking at the 8-600 and 4-1200 amps I should be able to use 2 channels out of the 8-600 to feed my Quested High and Mid Drivers and then use 1 of the 4-1200's channels to feed the low driver.

    Questions:
    1) Can this be done? Mix and match different channels out of amps? Or is one limited to one amp per speaker.
    2) Is the crossover set in the amp then?
    3) Is there a pass-trough output capability in these amps to route the signal to more speakers/processors?

The spec sheet is not clear to me about these capabilities.
    • The DriveCoreTM Install Series represents
the latest in amplifier technology. Based on
    Crown's proprietary and patented DriveCore
technology, these amplifiers are the next
generation of PWM technology using cutting
    edge Class D amplifier topologies.
    • True Rack Density – power points of 300W or
600W in 2/4/8 channel configurations and
1250W in 2/4 channel configurations. Includes
bridgable outputs of 300-2500W, all in a 2U
form factor, providing flexibility in designs.
    • Minimum Guaranteed Power Ratings
    – DCi amplifiers are guaranteed to
deliver at least the rated power in the
specifications over a longer period of time
    than any other competing amplifier.
    • Direct Drive "Constant Voltage" capabilities
on a channel by channel basis for
    70Vrms or 100Vrms amplification without
the use of a step up frequency limiting
    transformer for higher audio quality.
    • Audio Architect supported amplifier.
    • Advanced PFC universal power supply provides
    market-leading efficency, and is designed
to deliver maximum power no matter where
the amplifier is located. Universal AC input
    accepts 100 – 240VAC, 50/60Hz (±10%).
    • DriveCore includes five patents that are
also included in Crown’s flagship touring
    amplifier I-Tech HD4, providing bestin-
    class versatility and durability.
    • TCP/IP based protocol in HiQnet for network
monitoring and control. Allows amplifier to
coexist on a standard network back bone.
    • Revolutionary cooling system, focuses airflow
on parts that need it most, maximizing efficiency
    while minimizing heat and noise.
    • BLU Link compatibility – low latency, fault
tolerant, digital audio bus, capable of routing
256 channels using standard Category 5e
cabling (over a distance of 100m between
devices), provides an unprecedented level of
    routing flexibility.

Oops I think my question was answered in the last paragraph.

Does anyone here have the new generation of crown class D amplifiers and how do they sound.

I believe that the system at Dolby's Office in Burbank uses these along with the JBL speakers and trust me there is a huge opportunity to improve Atmos over a commercial cinema, at home.

Peter "as always" your on the cutting edge with your equipment choice. Addressing and streamlining pro cinema and consumer in one has its complexities but that is your trademark, it will be interesting to see where you go with this.

When Dolby Atmos first launched they offered financial incentive for early adapters. I am toying with the idea of adding Atmos, features released in the format and market growth will be the deciding factor, it already seams to be dominating its competitor. The Trinnov looks interesting, thanks for the heads up. Keep us posted as your project unfolds.
