This is a first, Sonys new SRX-R800 series phosphor laser projector contains six laser modules. For the first time, Sonys cinema light engine is sealed. In theory, this should help maintain contrast.
Still curious if HDMI 2.0 has been added, so far no news on the inputs. Sounds like a nice projector.

Yes this is good news but still a lot of questions not only about there HDMI 2.0 inputs also how they handle HDR if at all from UHD Disc and more things.

The 10.000:1 on of sounds great but question is the Ansi Cr. that normally is not this good with LCOS.
I have never hear that one with big Lumen output have more than 350:1.

Also a Question is can be with a more aggressive Iris in the Lens the on off cr. improve or not and how much it will kills the Ansi cr.?
A Consumer LCOS can gain about good 60% in on off cr. when shrink the Iris in the lens.
That should boost this Pr. to above 16.000:1 on of and this if it works can be a ideal number at home.

How much off the listed 15000 lumens would one have to cut for such a gain in on-off contrast, you would think?

I expect to have with this modification only about 7000 Lumen may less so not "soo much more" than a Sony VW 5000 that had from beginning about 14.000:1 cr. and may Sony can/have increase this number already i dont know.

That need to be consider when talking about this new Laser Sony and do not forget the Sony VW 5000 have all the inputs we need  can do all what is need for home cinema and UHD Disc HDR 3D in a small quiet Pr.!

Correction, the projector has 4 laser phosphor modules. I have attached a few pages from a webinar showing more product detail.

External chiller, first time i see this on a standard Laser-Phosphor projector. Barco did this with some Flex projectors for customers that demand constant output over lifetime, run at 80%, plus added cooling. But not as standard.

This gives the Christie an edge, it has internal cooling. Plus the fact that it uses RGB laser. How much would the Sony be? I was told that the Cinema version of the 25K RGB was shipping for well below $100K.

Barco had since 1.5 years or more external chiller with there L30  the L45 and the L60.

What I post about the Sony VW 5000 was still a issue when consider to purchase a 815.
The VW 5000 had the better on off cr. have HDMI 2.0 inside can do HDR  had laser dimming to boost cr. and so on.

All this the 815 not have it !!!

The only issue was that the Sony 5000 is not a DCI Pr. but with good UHD Disc it is not a big issue anymore.

So for smaller screens this VW 5000 is the much better projector and cheaper as well.
And it is not such a havy monster.

I know the RGB Lasers have always had external chillers, till Christie managed to integrate the cooling into its latest smaller RGB laser projector, that just started shipping. It is new to me on Laser-Phosphor cinema projectors. I only knew of commercial constant output applications that had chillers added to the regular projector.

The Sony 270/280/5000 is designed for stacking, so one can get closer to the brightness of a single 815, as shown at the Art Sonneborn theater. He prefers it over the Thor he saw at your theater. It sure is a lot cheaper. The Christie at similar price as two Sony 5000s should offer higher brightness, but lower on-off contrast. christie still says over 5000:1, but I only saw a prototype last year, that did not show that level of contrast to me. So the Sony 5000 is still the on-off king among the mentioned projectors.

I am so far I know the only one in the world that had have both the Barco Thor and the Sony VW 5000 parallel for at almost half a year
at the same screen under ideal perfect condition.

So there was a reason why I sale the Sony 5000 and keep the much more expensive Barco Thor!

When Art visit me he saw as I have post in my Barco Thor Thread a Thor that was displaying only in the good 3000:1 on off cr. range because of wrong levels from the Oppo UHD Player.
After I found it out and correct it so now the cr. was about 6300:1 native.
I have many times post details about what are the differences between this 2 projectors but to keep it short the Barco Thor is the much better Pr.

Only in one aspect the on off cr. number he is about half as good as the Sony but the 3 times better Ansi cr. cover this very good.

But depends on how important for the individual user the black level is they may rate the 2-3% almost 100% dark images in a movie in average so important that they do not care about all other image parameters that was at the screen the other 97% of the time from a movie.
And do not forget the Sony is a Laser Phosphor not a true RGB direct laser.

One week ago a friend visit me and brings his Sony 5000 for a compare.
He can confirm what I say or ask Uwe he saw in my cinema both pr. at the screen and there must be a reason why Uwe orders the Barco after even if he see the Barco Thor with only half the cr. improvement as only the new HC Lens was there not the other cr. improvements Barco did over the time.
He saw the Barco with about 4700:1 on off cr. but this was enough for him to order the Thor.

The Sony 5000 have other advantages over the Barco Thor.
It cost a fraction of the price and it have a small not heavy body compare to the very big and heavy Barco Thor and it is may the second best Pr. out there and for more people affordable.

You read my postings since long time so I am wondering why you bring this up?

I just share my observation and my test results to the public that like to read it as I am in a luxury position to have such items to compare it without any financial interest.
But I am close to a point where I have ask myself if I need such discussions anymore and I tend to say stop it as I lost fun to do it anymore.
This is not about you this is a general thing with many reason behind.

You introduced the comparison between the 15K lumens Sony 815, and the Sony 5000. So I thought it relevant to mention that a stack of the 5000 would offer the benefits of the 5000 you mention, HDMI 2.0, laser modulation, HDR support in the software/processing, plus the ability to offer better HDR support, and or the applicability to larger screen0, by offering twice the brightness. The prime example being Art's renovated theater.

I am not one to downplay the Barco Thor's capabilities. Sorry to read you think I am raining on your parade, saying bad things about the Thor or you theater.

All brands of Cinema projectors have several advantages over consumer projectors even when limited to using HDMI 1.4 with the exception of black level. The Barco Thor does HDR more accurate in all areas minus black
then any consumer projector.
Most consumers are not aware of the short comings in their projector of choice.
