  • Is first generation laser ready for prime time?

Laser is the next frontier in cinema projection technology, it promises extended color space, higher contrast, HFR & brighter 3D and cheaper operating expense over time. First generation however is not cheap. Several of the D-cinema projection manufactures are
close to deliver production units but it has been reported speckle is still an issue and contrast is weak. Add to this the high cost to buy into the technology, most cinemas barely survived the digital transition. Speaking of cheaper operating expense over time it is now being said blue laser/phosphor will lose 50% of its light during its estimated 20,000 life span while 6P will lose 25 to 30% with phosphor technology suffering greater color stability issues between the two. First generation laser may not offer as high an advantage over time verses using Xenon as expected.
Next gen laser is already in the works and will be cheaper. Sony is the only manufacture not following suit saying when they are ready to bring their Laser technology to market it will raise the bar, lets see.
I do believe laser has a future in cinema projection and while first generation may not deliver its full potential it will be interesting to watch the technology mature.
