Going Live: Barco, Regal and AEG team on L.A. Innovation Center
By Bill Mead May 4, 2016

Barco, the Belgian-based technology company and leading global supplier of cinema-grade projectors, launched and celebrated their new multi-year, three-way partnership with leading sports and entertainment presenter AEG and Regal Cinemas at their ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 31. In what appears to be a complete win-win-win for all three companies, Regal’s flagship theatre, one of the crown jewels of the Los Angeles cinemagoing scene, has been renamed and transformed into the “Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center.”

During the ceremony, representatives from the companies highlighted the increased significance this addition would bring to the L.A. LIVE venue, arguably the leading Los Angeles primary cinema destination. Opened in 2009 and centered in downtown Los Angeles next to AEG’s famous Staples Center, Regal L.A. LIVE boasts annual attendance of over 20 million and hosts an average of 20 or more Hollywood premieres yearly. Speaking at the event were Todd Goldstein, chief revenue officer at AEG; Lee Zeidman, president of Staples Center, Microsoft Theatre and L.A. LIVE; Rob Del Moro, Regal’s chief purchasing officer, and Wim Buyens, chief executive officer at Barco Entertainment.

In the deal, Barco gets highly visible naming rights along with an industry showroom for all its latest cinema products and technologies under the CinemaBarco brand. The presentation starts in the lobby with Barco Lobby Experience and moves into the main auditoriums featuring the latest in Barco laser-illuminated cinema projectors, along with Barco’s AuroMax® immersive sound system. In addition, one auditorium has been equipped with Barco Escape, an exciting new multi-screen format.

The Barco Lobby Experience turns the cinema lobby into an immersive storytelling environment, utilizing a combination of animated box-office, concession and menu boards, dynamic movie posters, and multi-screen, synchronized feature film promotional content. The Barco Lobby Experience is essentially a show-before-the-show presented on up to 60 flat-screen monitors divided into four primary zones, with synchronized trailers, advertising and videos all choreographed into a unique and engaging lobby experience.

Barco is sourcing movie trailers and upcoming attractions from the studios and other content providers. The Barco Lobby Experience also includes potential revenue-generating possibilities for exhibitors. By leveraging its strong relationships with studios and other equipment providers, Barco offers a complete cinema lobby solution, including all hardware and software, content creation and management services to customize each lobby with full integration with ticketing, concessions and other corporate platforms.

The core product of the Barco Lobby Experience is Barco’s new X2O real-time visual-communications platform. Everything from basic content packages featuring digital posters, box-office and concession templates, to synchronized screen arrays for a full “Lobby Domination” sequence are managed by the X2O platform. Back-end analytics provide customer interactivity data, enabling owners to adapt content to deliver the most effective messages. Greg Patrick, Barco’s VP, digital cinema-lobby, commented, “We are thrilled to create a home for our Barco Lobby Experience at the new Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center, where visitors can truly immerse themselves in a real-life cinema lobby. Exhibitors can now enjoy the convenience, weekly content updates and cost-efficiency of working with a turnkey solution provider to create an interactive and engaging cinema lobby for a new generation.”

Two of the largest auditoriums in the L.A. LIVE complex have been equipped with Barco’s latest Flagship Laser illuminated projector. Regal is among more than 40 exhibitors in over 20 countries to have installed Barco’s DP4K-60L Flagship Laser projector in their Premium Large Format (PLF) auditoriums. With twice the brightness of any xenon projector, the DP4K-60L offers outstanding image quality with an exceptional brightness level, increased contrast ratio and vivid colors for a radically improved 3D movie experience. Installed with the unique Barco Alchemy Integrated Cinema Media Processor (ICMP), it's capable of showing 4K content at 60 frames per second and 3D movies in 4K. Fully integrated, the DP4K-60L greatly reduces installation and operational complexity. The rest of the L.A. LIVE auditoriums are scheduled to receive the newly announced Barco Laser phosphor projectors later this year, turning L.A. Live into one of the first all-laser-illuminated multiplexes in the U.S.

Of course, the larger auditoriums at L.A. LIVE, are also equipped with newly enhanced Barco AuroMax® immersive sound. Barco Auro, introduced in 2010, features a unique 11.1-channel sound format that adds two additional layers of sound to the existing 5.1 surround sound layer. The newly enhanced Barco AuroMax format combines with the Barco Auro 11.1 object-based techniques from Barco Audio Technologies (formerly IOSONO). The results are natural, acoustically perfect representations of standardized immersive sound—at up to half the cost of a typical object-based sound system.

One auditorium at L.A. LIVE has been equipped with Barco Escape, the three-screen, panoramic movie format that offers a truly immersive visual experience. Barco Escape debuted to the public in 2014 with scenes in The Maze Runner and later in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. So far, Barco has approximately 20 Escape installations around the world. Barco and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions recently announced that Star Trek Beyond, one of this year’s most anticipated films, will be released in Barco Escape by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions on July 22. Additionally, director Scott Waugh is currently in preproduction on the first feature-length Barco Escape film, tentatively scheduled for a late 2016 release.

Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center is an industry showplace, where Los Angeles cinemagoers and industry insiders can come together to see, hear and experience the latest in Barco’s presentations technologies, all under the CinemaBarco name. The ongoing arrangement between AEG, Regal Cinemas and Barco puts Barco’s cinema efforts on the fast track in terms of gaining valuable brand-name recognition and exposure of its technologies to the sophisticated and often technically savvy audiences at the center of the Los Angeles market.

AEG, Regal Relaunching L.A. Live With Cinema Technology Developer Barco
The 'Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center' will include Barco laser projection in all auditoriums.

AEG has entered into a multi-year partnership with cinema technology developer Barco that will involve renaming and relaunching the AEG-owned downtown Los Angeles movie complex as Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center.

That includes naming rights and massive plans to equip the complex with Barco cinema technologies—among them, the latest Barco laser-projection systems will be installed in all 14 auditoriums.

The wider deal is a global technology partnership between Barco and AEG, which is expected by include additional AEG live event sites (L.A. LIVE is AEG's only movie theater property), according to Barco exec Todd Hoddick. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

As to movie theaters, Hoddick said "we are open to doing this in more locations."

For its April 1 launch, the L.A. LIVE complex will already have two auditoriums equipped with Barco's ultra-bright laser projectors, with the rest to follow. Additionally, two auditoriums will offer Barco’s immersive sound system, Auro; and one auditorium will feature the company’s new three-screen, Cinerama-like Barco Escape, which initially debuted in select sites with portions of The Maze Runner created in the format. L.A. LIVE’s lobby will also get an upgrade with Barco’s ‘lobby experience’ design that features digital displays, light and promotional interactive content.

“Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE hosts over 20 movie premieres annually and, since opening in 2009, has provided the public with one of the best movie-going experiences possible. We are taking the next step in the movie theater’s illustrious history by installing all the latest Barco technology, yet again setting a new standard in cinema quality,” said Greg Dunn, president and COO for Regal, in a statement.

L.A. LIVE's 4D cinema, which uses the 4DX system the Seoul-headquartered 4D company CJ 4DPlex, is not affected by this deal.

Related, cinema technology developer Dolby has been working to brand its technology in theaters, with its Dolby Vision high dynamic range laser projection system and Dolby Atmos immersive sound system in Dolby-configured auditoriums dubbed Dolby Cinema. "Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime" is offered at select AMC auditoriums.

Regal L.A. Live theater gets a high-tech boost from Belgium's Barco
Belgian cinema technology company Barco recently unveiled its new panoramic-screen system Barco Escape.

    Ryan Faughnder

The Regal L.A. Live movie theater is turning to Belgian cinema innovator Barco for a technological overhaul, adding the company's laser projectors, advanced sound and a new immersive three-screen system.

Theater chain Regal Entertainment Group and L.A. Live owner AEG have partnered with Barco to bring its cutting edge technology to the downtown Los Angeles multiplex, the companies announced Monday.

“Our goal is to have this be the world's most technologically advanced movie theater,” said Shelby Russell, vice president of marketing for AEG. “This is a commitment to the future of cinema.”

The investment comes as cinema operators around the country face stagnating attendance and increased competition from other entertainment options. Theater owners hope technological improvements and other additions -- such as better food and beverage options -- can improve their fortunes by better enticing consumers.

Barco hopes its latest high-profile deal will help accelerate its global growth in the exhibition industry.

Regal L.A. Live will initially have two laser projectors and will become the West Coast's first all-laser multiplex by the end of the year, the companies said.

The theater will also serve as a high-profile showcase for Barco's Escape theater system, which surrounds the audience with three screens in one auditorium. Barco Escape, first introduced in 2014, has been installed in 20 theaters around the world, including Cinemark XD at the Promenade in Westchester.

Regal L.A. Live will also unveil a new lobby with new digital displays, lights and other Barco technology.

The companies declined to say how much the project would cost. But Barco Escape alone costs $120,000 to $150,000 to install in theaters.

Barco hopes to use the  partnership with Regal and AEG as a platform to show off its tech innovations for moviegoers, filmmakers and studio executives in the heart of the world's entertainment industry capital.

“If you're going to validate a new business and a new movie-going experience, you need the highest possible bar in the beginning, and for us, that's Los Angeles,” said Todd Hoddick, Chief Executive of Barco Escape.

The companies will hold a public event at the theater April 1 to debut the revamped theater, which will be renamed Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center.

It's the latest technological upgrade at Regal L.A. Live, which in 2014 became the first multiplex in the country to offer a 4DX theater from South Korea's CJ Group. The experience combines moving and vibrating seats with wind, fog and other sensory effects to match the action on screen.

Barco-branded experience at Regal LA Live extends beyond cinema

      Annlee Ellingson
      Staff Writer
      L.A. Biz

Moviegoers aren’t saying, “Let’s see it in Barco!” Yet. The Belgian visualization technology company is branding its cinema experience like Imax and Dolby before it with a full-theater takeover at the AEG-owned Regal L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center is previewing its naming-rights partnership — among the first of its kind for an entire cinema complex — for the press on Thursday and opening to the public on Friday with a neighborhood block party and free concessions for ticket buyers. But the movie theater is just the start in a global deal that will see Barco products play a role at concerts and live events at AEG venues around the world.

Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center opens to the public on Friday with a neighborhood block party and free concessions for ticket buyers.

Under the deal, two auditoriums will be equipped with Barco Flagship Laser projectors, with the remaining screens to be outfitted by the end of the year. Regal L.A. Live will be the first all-laser multiplex on the West Coast.

“I’m very excited about the laser projectors,” Shelby Russell, VP of marketing for AEG and L.A. Live, told me. “Everyone’s showing the same movies, so for us to have a better picture quality than other movie theaters out there is important.”

One auditorium will be outfitted with Barco Escape, the three-screen panoramic movie format that was installed in about 20 theaters worldwide for last year’s “Maze Runner” sequel.

The company plans to deploy the system in 150 locations this year and another 350 next year, Escape CEO Todd Hoddick told me, with expectations to deliver four Hollywood movies in the format by the end of the year, eight in 2017 and a dozen per year after that.

“What we’re doing is making product improvements and lining up a slate of movies and content so that the exhibitors can have confidence that when they do the installation, there’s going to be a nice pipeline of content for them,” he said.

In addition, multiple auditoriums at L.A. Live will be installed with Barco Auro immersive sound, and the lobby and concourse areas will be outfitted with about 60 digital displays, lights and other technologies that will immerse visitors in a cinematic experience from the moment they walk through the theater doors.

Hoddick, who started his career at the Walt Disney Company, compares Barco’s new lobby experience to Disneyland’s Main Street.

“You can’t take people from the parking lot and the bill collectors and the 405 and all the issues in the world and drop them into the middle of a fantasy or a romance,” he said. “You need to give them a transition. So the lobby for us is really our Main Street — it’s where the storytelling begins so you can get people into the right frame of mind to escape the real world and participate in a romance or a thriller or an adventure.”

Barco works with studios to create movie-themed content that’s synched across the lobby screens, lighting and music.

The Barco Innovation Center will serve as a permanent, evolving showcase for the company’s technology and aims to position the theater as a premier venue in the entertainment capital of the world.

“It’s all about the feedback,” Hoddick said. “The reason that we’re doing this is to hear from the audience, to hear from the directors.” This is especially true in the case of Escape. “Making sure that we do this close to Hollywood … is absolutely critical as we work with filmmakers around this new language and this new experience. They need a place to go and sit and see it and be a part of it, and this is close to home for them of course.”

“We’re in the heart of the movie industry, so to showcase [the Barco] movie experience to the industry is very important,” AEG’s Russell added. “Certainly we feel that these technologies will help add to that and hopefully entice more movie premieres and film festivals as well.”

The AEG-Barco partnership is not limited to the Regal L.A. Live, however. “We’re working with AEG and L.A. Live to deliver these compelling experiences in their venues across the world,” Hoddick said. “You’re going to see a change to things like concerts, live events, hockey games, basketball games — bringing compelling technology to really put on the best show and entertainment experience we can for them and for their audience.”

Barco to take over Regal L.A. Live
      ANNLEE ELLINGSON

Regal L.A. Live is getting a new name and new technology. The AEG-owned movie theater in downtown Los Angeles has struck a multi-year strategic partnership with Barco to create Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center.

The 14-screen multiplex will serve as a creative hub for all of the Belgian company’s cinema technology, including its laser projection system, immersive sound, three-screen format and lobby experience. The deal marks the first naming-rights partnership for an entire movie theater complex.

When the rebranded cinema launches on April 1, two auditoriums will be equipped with Barco Flagship Laser projectors, with the remaining screens to be outfitted by the end of the year. Regal L.A. Live will be the first all-laser multiplex on the West Coast.

In addition, one auditorium will be equipped with Barco Escape, the company’s three-screen panoramic movie format that’s rolled out to a limited number of theaters for “The Maze Runner” and its sequel. Director Scott Waugh (“Act of Valor” and “Need for Speed”) is in pre-production on the format’s first feature-length film, currently scheduled for a late 2016 release.

Multiple auditoriums will be installed with Barco Auro immersive sound, and the lobby and concourse areas will be outfitted with digital displays, lights and other technologies that will immerse visitors in a cinematic experience from the moment they walk through the theater doors.

The partnership gives Barco “the opportunity to showcase all of these great experiences under one roof,” said Barco senior VP Wim Buyens in a statement.

Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center will launch on April 1 with a neighborhood block party complete with a live DJ, street performers, local artists and more. Moviegoers who buy tickets for 6 p.m. shows or later that day will get free small popcorns and fountain drinks.
