Satellite Operator SES has been running this trial of a managed 4K TV channel delivery platform with a growing number of network operators in North America since the summer of 2016. With Verizon SES has signed its first national operator to try the 4K service. Till now the operators were generally smaller regional cable and IPTV operators, not large enough to establish their own 4K platform.
According to SES the trials are for multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to evaluate the SES satellite-based Ultra HD solution during trials aimed at accelerating Ultra HD home delivery.

"This collaborative agreement between SES and Verizon marks an important milestone in the development of our Ultra HD solution. Leading television services providers, such as Verizon, are evaluating our platform as a way to integrate scalable and dedicated satellite bandwidth into their Ultra HD launch plans," explained Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development for SES in North America.
Adding "With more than 4.5 million video subscribers, Verizon Fios represents an exciting addition to our overall effort aimed at making Ultra HD more affordable and faster to market for TV services providers across the region".
As part of the collaboration, Verizon will receive and test content from SES's pre-packaged Ultra HD platform, which combines a growing lineup of Ultra HD channels and reception equipment in a cost-effective service delivered over scalable satellite capacity.
The roster of 4K channels available across the globe is limited so one sees the same channels included. The SES 4K offer currently consists of less main stream channels, all except TERN's Insight 4K, NASA TV UHD, remotely managed and produced by ecoding and mediamanagement technology powerhouse Harmonic, and the SES Demochannel, are distributed by Vivicast. Even the UHD-1 channel that SES in Europe operates itself, as a freely available demochannel during the day and a encrypted channels at night and during the weekend, available as part of its HD+ subscription package in Germany, is distributed by Vivicast across the America's..
Fashion One 4K, Insight 4K, TravelXP 4K (with some HDR), Nature Relaxation, Clubbing/C4K360 (dance music and extreme sports,with VR), 4K Universe, Nasa TV UHD, UHD1 and SES Demo Channel. Nine lineair channels in total are part of the service being trialed.
SPI's Funbox 4K is not available via SES, it is carried by its traditional rival Eutelsat. SES did recently win a distribution agreement with SPI for the HD versions of its channelpackage for Latin America.
