  • Imax Demos New Laser Technology to Mostly Bright Reception

A group of studio and exhibition executives, as well as filmmakers, gathered early this month to witness Imax’s newst toy — a laser projection prototype — in action.

Feedback has been bright, yet reserved for the final product.

The new system, which Imax showcased at its home office in Santa Monica, features dual 4K laser digital projectors for both 2D and 3D systems, the first of its kind, along with an enhanced sound system that represents the largest research and development investment in the history of Imax.

“This is a technology that I’ve been looking forward to coming online for a while now,” said Joseph Kosinski, director of “Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion.” Kosinski added that he is most excited about the system’s impact on 3D presentation.

“Laser promises to bring up the brightness levels to where they always should have been for 3D,” said Kosinski, who was joined by roughly 250-300 museum and industry professionals who were spread across several hour-long presentations held during the week of November 4-8.

To date, Imax has inked approximately 20 laser deals worldwide, with upgrades at theaters including the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood,AMC’s Lincoln Square in New York, Sydney’s Darling Harbor location and the Smithsonian’s three Imax locations in Washington D.C. Imax plans to begin installation by the end of 2014.

“Both the AMC and Wanda teams were really excited about what we saw,” said Elizabeth Frank, exec VP and chief content and programming officer for AMC Theatres. “The combination of the more immersive audio and the depth of the visuals took the experience to a whole new level.”

Still, not everyone is sold entirely.

“They are very skilled at what they do,” said Roger Harris, chief operating officer for Odeon, the largest theater chain in the U.K. and Ireland, “but nothing is guaranteed when you’re trying to develop very sophisticated technology.”

Harris noted that in order to justify the cost of conversion, which will vary from theater to theater, audiences — but more importantly, fans of Imax — will need to be able to see a difference in the quality of presentation. That’s something Harris is confident will happen, however.

“The difference between the blacks and whites were clear to me,” Harris noted, “and in order to make the investment, you have to believe more people will come.”

Imax had no comment for this story.

Thanks for posting. Hoping at some point there will be discussions covering contrast benefits associated with laser.

My pleasure. I have talked to Barco extensively about this issue, and it is definitely possible (since the laesrlight does not scatter tightening of the aperture path is not the way, but yet there are new brightness contrast trade-off conditions that do apply, they are tight-lipped about that part (I am thinking modulation) but still the maximum contrast is limited by the native DMD contrast which is like 10/12-1 max.

If some kind of group purchase, say 10 projectors could be put together it could be financially viable for Barco to recoup the engineering involved but unfortunately other barriers exist. There is the stupid FDA regulations that will make it nearly impossible to see these commercial projectors , once given the OK to go into certain public venues to go into peoples homes.

That will be an ordeal, the top R&D NEC executive nearly stood up and walked out of the meeting with me at Showeast the moment I mentioned the term RESIDENTIAL. Not because of the expected FDA customer nursing standards, but simply because of a Class A commercial and Class B residential standards.

So it appears these manufacturers are shell shocked by the regulations both FDA and FCC.

The solution to be the first kid in the block with DCI laser may have to be that you zone the facility as commercial even though within a residential compound. You may need to make available through a bonafide business program the facility to say review dailies or some other form of commercial service.

This will buy you 3-4 years of quality laser projection at home.
This also gets you Dolby Atmos, which quite frankly DCI at Home Enthusiasts, If you don't have that you are missing the next major breakthrough. We achieved an incredible holosonic 3D space in Moscow PH using the Trinnov 3D remapping and height channels, it is solid it is all around you but unlike Atmos it does not invade your personal space. Atmos does just that you have this huge Holosonic wrap around soundfield that is phenomenal, and then the fun starts (specially when you have accompanying 3D imaging) there you will actually hear space debris emanate out of the screen towards you, punching through your stomach, other deconstructive elements like space station components fly around your head, you can hear an ailing loudspeaker repeating Houston Houston (that one goes behind your head and parks itself behind your left earlobe). You must have Atmos, but do it right, do not use horn speakers, we had an epiphany in accuracy and clarity with the Quested speakers, it will deliver a 30% improvement over plain vanilla Atmos. Also having a Trinnov system integrated with the Atmos, will be significantly superior than the standard b-chain equalization.

2 of our installers are now Atmos certified. I know some of you (specially if doing 3D) would want to not limit to Atmos in order to enjoy Dreamworks titles which are exclusively Auro. The fact that the Auro kit is aes whilst Atmos uses the Harman Blu-link infrastructure makes the proposition of having and Auro and Atmos integrated systems (with Trinnov) incredible complex one.

But that is subject for a separate thread which we are knee deep in the research phase presently.
