The country's three major broadcasters will launch their terrestrial broadcasts in 4K tomorrow morning at 5 AM local time on Wednesday May 31. The Korean broadcasts will be the first regular over-the-air service to offer 4K and the first to use ATSC 3.0.
Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced KBS, MBC and SBS will start to air programmes in 4K using the preliminary ATSC 3.0 set of standards, devised by the US Advanced Television Commission. This means a set-top box will be required to receive the over-the-air broadcasts, as Korean built TVs only support the established global, but Europe-led DVB-T2 standard, for digital terrestrial broadcasting and reception.
However LG has shown ATSC 3.0 4K sets at CES, so undoubtedly there will be TVs that will support the standard as it matures.
Initially coverage will be limited to the capital Seoul, and surrounding area's, and the harbour city Incheon, aswell as some neighbouring areas. together these areas make up the Seoul Capital Area. SCA is the metropolitan area centered on Seoul located in the north-west of South Korea, besides Seoul, it also contains two more different administrative districts; Incheon and Gyeonggi-do, and has a population of 24 million.
Originally scheduled for launch at 5 AM on February 28, the launch was reportedly pushed back due to lacking equipment.
