Turkish TV manufacturer Vestel is bringing its first OLED TV to the UK (and wider European?) market under the Toshiba brand. Toshiba itself stopped producing tv sets in 2015. Vestel has been manufactureing both for other brands and licensing brands for years, after it was unable to establish its own brand in Europe, early this century.
This year OLED Tvs are coming from a number of manufacturers, in addition to the OLED panel maker LG. It is surpising to see the technology pop up at what traditionally is a maker of entry level and mid-range TVs. LG Display must have got its mojo working, and hitting both volume and yield to allow for less premium TVs to adopt the technology. On the other hand LG needs other brands and volume to establish OLED as more than a niche category, and fight of Samsung's QLED LCD.
The Toshina X97 comes in one size only 65". It is scheduled for a september release at a yet to be announced price.
Vestel says "this model shows 99% of the DCI-P3 colour space, ensuring that the on-screen imagery looks exactly as the movie and TV directors intended". So more or less on par with the other OLED TVs.
However the TV does not offer HDR. The company told reporters it sees little interest from consumers in HDR, sofar.
And, like all OLED TVs this year it will not have a 3D layer, and therefore not support 3D. Vestel showed a remote control with a dedicated 3D button during a presentation in London, wich will be lacking on the final version. The remote control will feature a netflix button, indicating support for that service in the TVs 'smart' functions. No further details are provided about the smartplatform/software used.
It seems Netflix is about to bring 4K streaming to non-US markets as Vestel announced the X97 wich is scheduled for a September release provides f4k support for Netflix. Netflix sofar has only certified devices intended for the US for its US 4K service. "Built with an interactive, smart portal, it provides 24/7 access to on demand and catch-up TV services, enabling viewers to tune into 4K content from Netflix and YouTube".
Quite telling no input lag time is provided, instead the announcement says the X97 is "offering winning response times of less than 1ms when in game mode".
The TV offers a ScreenShare feature, which enables viewers to contribute to the TV line-up. With this function, viewers can share content from their Android devices straight onto the big screen.
