Last year at IFA, Sony was expected to launch a laser-phosphor projector in its SXRD Home Theater Range, but instead there were three follow-on models with incremental updates. This year the laser projector looks to be more than wishful thinking, as it has been assigned a model number, MSRP, and further specs have come out. The new top of the range home theater projector is reported to cost 15K. Sony will hold its press conference tomorrow, to announce its new products at the Berlin Internationale Funk Ausstellung on Thursday August 31.
The key info has been let out of the bag ahead of the show. The Sony VPL-VW760ES is scheduled for a November release, at € 14.999. The resolution is 4K as we are accustomed from Sony's SXRD range, however with the fast responding lightsource the framerate is not increased, but remains steady at 60.
Brightness is specified at 2000 lumens. No gamut is indicated nor the loss resulting from using a wider gamut calibration. The laser-phosphor light source should last 20,000 hours. And provide an infinite dynamic contrast.
HDR is covered with disc standard HDR10, and broadcaster favorite HLG, but not the dynamic metadata version of HDR10, HDR10+ backed by Samsung and Panasonic and Studio Fox, nor the Dolby and Technicolor alternatives, Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR.
The two lamp based units show similar specs as the models from last year, but at a lower price. The 1500 lumens Sony VPL-VW260ES is said to cost €4,999, and the Sony VPL-VW360ES € 6.999. They should be available in October. HDR 10 and HLG are supported, and Reality Creation is not extended to 4K content reproduction.
