  • Blackmagic Design launches 4K Micro 4/3s 60P Raw recording Pocket Cinema Camera

Blackmagic introduced its new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K camera at NAB in Las Vegas today. The new carbon fiber body camera has a full 4/3 HDR sensor, dual native ISO up to 25,600 "with incredible low light performance" and 13 stops of dynamic range. An USB-C Expansion Port allows customers to record using the internal SD/UHS-II and CFast recorders or directly to external disks.

It will be available from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide later this year for only $1,295. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is directly pitted against the Panasonic GH5s video oriented Micro 4/3rds, at half the cost.

The design features a new lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite material so the camera body has incredible strength and rigidity to protect it from accidental knocks and drops. The handheld design features a multi function grip which has logically placed buttons and dials that allow super fast access to essential shooting functions such as recording start/stop, still photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, power and more.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has an MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount, 5 inch touchscreen monitor, 10-bit ProRes and 12-bit RAW recording, 3D LUTs, 4 built in microphones, mini XLR audio input with phantom power, Bluetooth wireless camera control, HDMI on set monitoring output.

Internal recording in 12 Bit Raw format is limited to 4K 30P, in 10 Bit ProRes intermediate codec the camera can record in 60P. Raw recording at 60P requires an external USB-C drive or recorder.

As the image above shows one would need a rather large pocket to carry the camera around. Compared to other professional 4K camera's it is indeed compact.
