  • Sony 2018 MASTER Serie A9F and Z9F BRAVIA TVs to feature Calman auto-calibration

Following samsung and G, Sony is the third major TV maker that has its high-end TV integrated with Portrait Displays, Inc.'s CalMAN auto calibration software. The auto calibration feature for Sony's 2018 MASTER Series A9F and Z9F BRAVIA 4K HDR televisions is being unveiled this week at a press event in New York City.

The auto calibration feature for Sony will be enabled in CalMAN 2018 R3 and is scheduled to ship at the same time the 2018 line of Sony MASTER Series televisions are released.

"You simply connect CalMAN on your computer to the Sony BRAVIA and let CalMAN's AutoCal make your picture perfect", says Martin Fishman, Co-CEO of Portrait Displays.

According to Portrait auto calibration is not only much faster than manual calibration, auto calibration also delivers much more consistent and reliable results.

"CalMAN's AutoCal ensures that you see the most accurate and life-like images, without missing any of the detail that the MASTER Series is capable of delivering. Once the calibration is applied in SDR, the calibration is carried over to HDR, making Sony's CalMAN Ready MASTER Series TVs even easier to calibrate", Fishman added.

"Providing access to CalMAN's auto calibration is a major part of Sony's goal of ensuring the highest level of image quality in the MASTER Series along with making it an easier process to calibrate", said Yasuyuki Tokukura, Chief Picture Quality Officer of Design and Development Division, Sony Visual Products Inc.

The MASTER Series of TVs 'was created to provide the image quality approaching that of a professional-grade monitor in a motion picture production studio. Sony's objective was to create a television capable of images that faithfully convey the content creators' full intent'.

Calibration is the process of fine-tuning a display to ensure that it closely matches an industry standard. Manual calibration can require an hour's work by a trained professional. Portrait Displays says the auto calibration provided by its CalMAN software accelerates the process for professional calibrators, along with enabling new users the ability to perform professional quality calibrations.

Sony MASTER Series Z9F LED with Netflix Lost in Space
Sony Electronics, Inc. today announced Netflix Calibrated Mode — available exclusively on the new Sony MASTER Series A9F OLED and Z9F LCD TVs — to ensure cinematic fidelity for the viewing experience on Netflix. Developed by Sony picture quality engineers, in collaboration with Netflix color scientists, Netflix Calibrated Mode delivers picture quality approaching that of a master monitor used for standard reference in motion picture production studios. With one simple menu setting, Netflix members can enjoy precise colors and accurate dynamic contrast, as seen through the eyes of the creator. This is especially evident when watching visually spectacular shows such as the Netflix original series "Lost in Space," with otherworldly landscapes and creatures draped in atmospheric lighting.

"In recent years, we have seen great advances in technology that have made an unprecedented impact on the way TV and film entertainment is consumed," said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics North America. "Both Sony and Netflix have been pioneering the industry in terms of content production and distribution, working directly with creators to bring their stories to entertainment lovers around the world. Sony and Netflix have put much effort into developing and supporting cutting-edge technologies, such as 4K picture resolution, high dynamic range (HDR) and Dolby Atmos™ sound that allow film professionals to authentically express their vision for fans to enjoy in their homes around the world."

"While recently watching 'Lost in Space,' I was struck by the vivid landscapes: lush forests, shadowed snowfields, and other visual elements that pulled me more deeply into the Robinsons' adventures," said Scott Mirer, vice president, device partner ecosystem, Netflix. "We can't wait for our members around the world watching on Sony's new MASTER Series TVs to get this fantastic experience and — for the very first time — to deliver studio-quality picture mastering to the living room with Netflix Calibrated Mode."

Sony MASTER Series is comprised of two new televisions – the A9F OLED TV and the Z9F LED TV. Drawing on Sony's half-century of TV engineering expertise, the MASTER Series delivers Sony's highest quality picture possible in a home setting. It comes with a variety of smart features and is the only series of TVs that offers Netflix Calibrated Mode.
