  • Sony Europe launches €200/£200 4K Blu-Ray player, UBP-X500

Sony Europe has announced its latest 4K HDR Blu-ray Player, the UBP-X500. At an Sony communicated price of €200/£200, it would be Sony's least expensive 4K blu-ray disc player to date.

According to the product page and the online spec. sheet this comes at the price of Dolby Vision support. HDR10 is mentioned, Dolby Vision is notably absent from the HDR picture painted by Sony, let alone the other dynamic metadata HDR systems,by Samsung and Technicolor/Philips. This may make the current X700 player the better choice for now, as it goes for the same price, but does offer DV support.

The UBP-X500 features 'advanced upscaling of everything you watch to 4K resolution so you can enjoy detailed images even with non 4K contents', Sony says in its announcement. It also offers HDR to SDR conversion to bring some of the HDR effect to SDR displays.

The UBP-X500 is available from mid-August, so basically next week.
