  • Panasonic adds Dolby Vision and Amazon streaming to DP-UB824 UHD Blu-Ray player

Panasonic has started adding Dolby Vision support with a new firmware version for its 2018 UHD Blu-Ray player. The player already supports the default HDR10 and HDR10+, the frame-by-frame variable meta-data HDR system backed by Samsung and Panasonic. Firmware version 1.21 also adds Amazon Prime Video, Netflix streaming already present via an earlier firmware update.

This makes the UB-824 the first UHD Blu-Ray player that supports the two largest competing dynamic metadata HDR systems in one device. Dolby's Dolby Vision and Samsung's HDR10+, that is backed by Panasonic and Twentieth Century Fox.

The UB9004/9000 adds seven channel analog outputs and a heavier chassis and power supply, on top of the functionality of the UB824/820 that offers a second HDMI output for seperate audio output. The 2018 players offer High resolution audio, such as WAV/FLAC/MP3/AAC/WMA, DSD, ALAC and AIFF

The players are HD Premium certified. 4K Direct Chroma Upscaling provides upscaling from HD to 4K. HDR Optimiser adds tone mapping to the player that allows the player to map the HDR instead of the TV. HDR to SDR conversion allows for HDR content to be displayed on SDR displays. And HDR Adjustmentnallows for adjustment of HDR to the room conditions.

The 2018 disc players offer voice control through both the Google and the Amazon Alexa assistant. This requires a seperate Alexa or Google speaker/device that receives the voice commands.
