  • New Sony 4K Homethetaer Projectors VW270, 570 and 870

Sony put product pages online for its three new 4K home theater projectors. Pages that have now been removed, however the pdf versions are still available. According to reports from Germany the VW270 will have an MSRP of €5,000, the VW570, should cost €8,000, both are traditional high-pressure lamp based projectors. The new LASER-Phosphor lit VW870 has an MSRP of €25,000, or ten thousand over the introductory price of the VW760 Sony's first 4K Home Theater laser-phosphor projector. In the US its introduction caused quite a stir, as Sony priced the US modelnumber VW785 much higher. A trend that may or may not continue, as the US Dollar has re-appreciated since then.

The 760 will remain in the line up, as the 870 is positioned considerably higher, closer to the VW5000.

Formal introduction of the new projectors and other consumer products are scheduled for later this week at the IFA show in Berlin.

    The product sheets:
    Sony VW270
    Sony VW570
    Sony VW870

The product description for the Sony VW 870's lightsource simply reads 'laser diode' nothing more, the lack of advertising for a more advanced laser light source puts down all the hopes and speculation about it featuring both Red and Blue laser diodes to enhance color gamut, and saturation. Like its commercial counterpart, the GTZ240, it does feature the more expensive ARC lens found in the GTZ270/280/VW5000 models.

Another important upgrade over the 760 is the controllable iris. This allows users to use full laser power, which provides the maximum contrast, will reducing light out through the iris. Clamping down the iris should even increase the projector's contrast ratio. The VW760 can only reduce laser output and therefor contrast.

The Asterix behind the HDMI input item: "*4 HDMI Input2 is compatible with HDCP 2.2." suggest only the second input is upgraded to 18 Gbit/s and full functionality,on the 570 and 270.
