LG Electronics (LG) is introducing the world's first 8K (7680 x 4320) OLED TV. The 8K OLED was first introduced to the public at the end of last year, the beginning of the year by LG Display the developer and manufacturer of the OLED panels. Signalling the introduction of TVs based on the larger and higher resolution OLED panel.
Today LG Electronics announced it will 'preview', the 88-inch class 8K LG OLED TV, at IFA 2018 in Berlin this week, running through next week.
The 8K TV market is still in its infancy, however according to LG "it is expected to grow to more than 5 million units by 2022", LG added in a statement that it "is committed to leading the ultra-premium market with its 8K OLED TV technology". LG will continue to increase the OLED share in its premium TV portfolio and drive large scale consumer adoption of OLED TVs.
"LG's first 8K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology," said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. Adding "4K OLED played a major role in reshaping TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same".
LG expects OLED TV shipments in the market to double in 2018 and reach over nine million units by 2022. Leaving out how many OLED TVs will be shipped this year LG shows the technology is still a niche, volume wise, but often winning the various shoot-outs judged on picture quality. LG Display that manufactures the OLED panels recently announced it expects to sell and ship more than 2.9 million units to TV makers this year. after shipping over 1.3 million units in the first six months of this year. Last year LGD sold 1.7 million TV sized panels, with 0.6 million units in the first six months of 2017.
