  • Samsung expected to show laptop, tablet, monitor size RGB OLED displays at CES

According to a report in Korean Tech News service ET, Samsung is to show RGB OLED screens larger than those used in Mobile phones. Initially sizes are limited to those used in tablets, laptops and computer monitors. Samsung currently uses an RGB OLED screen in its 12" Galaxy Book. According to a report by Korean Industry news site The Elec Samsung has developed 4K laptop panels of 13.3", 14" and 15.6".

In 2017 Samsung supplied HP with a 2560 × 1440 pixel OLED Laptop panel, that saw limited uptake due to a high price differential between rhe OLED and LCD panels. For the 2019 generation Korean Industry sources expect a premium of $50 to $60 per panel.

On top of using the OLEDs in its own laptops, Samsung is said to be in negotiations with HP, Dell and Lenovo, for using the OLEDs in their products.

According to The Elec an industry official said that “There are various points of distinction for PC producers such as the wide view angle, quick response time, and thinness, in addition to having high resolution and low blue light,” and estimated that “next year [2019, ed.], premium laptops such as laptops with high-resolution OLED panels for gaming will be introduced in large quantities”.

According to DSCC the rigid, glass substrate, screen A2 production lines, have been largely freed up, as mobile phones are more and more equiped with flexible OLED screens, freeing capacity for larger OLED screens for laptops and tablets.

ET News speculates that Samsung has been able to make its inkjet printing technology work, allowing lower production costs, compared to the current high temperature depositing (evaporation) technique. For even larger panels, I.E. TVs Samsung is also developing the competing  Q(uantum)D(ot) RGB OLED Technology.
