  • Producers and cinematographers keeping film alive.

It appears film is still the preferred medium for shooting movies.

The countdown has begun as the entertainment industry eagerly looks to the New Year when Oscar® nominations are announced, and gears up for a new wave of highly-anticipated movies to arrive at theaters. One thing is for certain, 2015 will prove to be a year that is filmworthy.

Oscar buzz has been building around a number of productions originating on Kodak film, including Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, James Gray’s The Immigrant, Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, and Theodore Melfi’s St. Vincent.

Whether it was for film’s organic feel, rich amount of image information, depth of color, or special texture and subtleties the images elicit, all of these filmmakers decided celluloid was the right choice to tell their story.

It won’t be long into the New Year before one the first titles rolls out. Taken 3 will be released worldwide in January. Capturing all three of these action-packed, Liam Neeson thrillers required a "particular set of skills" that only film could provide.

Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella, shot by Haris Zambarloukas, BSC, arrives in cinemas in March. The DP, who had previously collaborated with Branagh on three features, has noted that film “is our preferred choice.”

Vince and the boys are back in town in June with Entourage debuting on the big screen. Director Doug Ellin and cinematographer Steven Fierberg, ASC chose Kodak film to give audiences a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood.

The park is open June 12 when Jurassic World hits theaters. Cinematographer John Schwartzman, ASC explains it was a “simple” decision to shoot film. “Steven Spielberg only shoots film. We also based the decision on the idea that the other Jurassic movies were shot on film and that these are day exterior movies. In day exterior situations, nothing surpasses film in terms of dynamic range. There’s not a digital camera in the world that can handle the difference between 20,000 footcandles in the highlights and six footcandles in the shadows, especially when you’re walking through a jungle.”

Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck will pull in the laughs when it premieres this summer. Cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes captured the humor on Kodak film. “There's a magic to the grain and the color quality that you get with film," Apatow noted in the Wall Street Journal.

Shaken, but not stirred by digital, Sam Mendes returns to celluloid for the next installment of the James Bond franchise. Spectre, which is being shot by Hoyte van Hoytema, FSF, NSC, is the 24th film in the 007 series, and finds this special agent back in action in theaters in November.

The force is with film in December when Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens opens in theaters. This highly-anticipated release is directed by J.J. Abrams and shot by Dan Mindel, ASC, BSC, both strong advocates for using motion picture negative. “I wanted to use film [on Star Wars] because there was going to be so much work done in digital,” Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter. “I wanted the standard to be film, so that everything had to match that. You just know when you’re looking at something shot on film, there’s a reality to it — you just can’t deny it.”

At a time when making resolutions become the guiding force for the coming months, it is film’s resolution that is hard to improve upon (wink. wink.) We can’t wait to see what else is filmworthy in 2015.
