  • Roland Garros sets match for 8K and 5G

French grand slam tennis tournament Roland-Garros 2019 will see the first live 8K broadcasts over a local 5G network to two showrooms. Technology and innovation sponsor France's incumbent telco Orange also demonstrated a mixed reality experience to get into the thick of the sporting action, access to all the useful information about the Grand Slam competition thanks to artificial intelligence. In addition France Télévisions' sports newsroom will test, in real conditions, Orange's new 5G broadcasting performance to film their coverage using mobile HD cameras.

This year, the French Tennis Federation, Orange and France Télévisions are joining forces to air the first ever live 8K TV images of the matches on the Philippe-Chatrier court, broadcast thanks to Orange's 5G network within the Roland-Garros stadium. France Télévisions' two Sharp 8K cameras, located on the Philippe-Chatrier court with their real time data processing platform, broadcast live to Orange's local 5G transmitters  deployed especially for the event.

The broadcaster and partners used 'HLG production and HLG distribution for live. For VOD, we chose to use PQ10, as it better fits the production workflow', PQ10 is the HDR curve that is used in HDR 10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, among other HDR broadcast schemes.

In this demonstration, NEC's "VC-8900" 8K material transmission encoder, which utilizes real-time video compression technologies, was used to transmit high-definition live 8K video of the tournament to 8K video monitors and 5G smartphones and tablets at a location within the tournament’s venue.

"Building on the success of this initiative, NEC will further promote the realization and expansion of next-generation broadcasting services using high-definition video in 2020 and beyond," said Takeshi Inoue, General Manager, Broadcast and Media Division, NEC Corporation.

Compression redundancy was provided by using two additional compression lines to output streams; 'the Advantech encoder, which recently announced and demonstrated an all-in-one live encoder/packager with Spin Digital at NAB 2019, is also hardware-based and produces a single bitrate HLS stream, this is a 1 RUbox.
An Intel SVT-HEVC 8K prototype version takes an IP input and produces a live, adaptive streaming output in HLS format; the server used was a 2RU server, running on a dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8180 processors'.

With 5G, mobile TV will enjoy very high-resolution images and will also be demonstrated on the very first 5G smartphones by Oppo, the premium partner of Roland-Garros. Lastly, a panoramic display wall demonstrated a unique and innovative way to make the most of the very high definition images that the networks of the future will be able to carry.
