LG Electronics will launch its new CineBeam 4K UHD projector lineup to the European market at IFA in Berlin next month, with availability also in September. There will be two models on offer, LG’s first Ultra Short Throw (UST) 4K UHD CineBeam Laser projector (model HU85L) and the LG 4K UHD CineBeam LED projector (model HU70L).
Both the laser-phosphor and LED projectors use an additional Green channel on top of the regular Red, Green and Blue, to enhance the projectors' brightness. The Laser projector is also special in the fact that it lacks a (phosphor/colourwheel), according to LG it is 'Wheel-less'. The LG LED projectors have long been wheel-less, offering three LEDs shining Red, Green and Blue light on the DMD DLP chip. The new projector uses a fourth LED for 'boosting image brightness'. The colour of that additional fourth LED is not named explicitly, but given the statement that it is 'dynamically adjusting green levels' to boost not only brightness but therefor also 'contrast and generating more vivid colors with more nuanced tonality'.
Lacking a colour or even a colour and a phosphor wheel, as in many laser-phosphor projectors LG claims the projectors do away with the Rainbow Effect, and clouding and color distortion. The laser projector does use phosphor to create green from blue sources; "the HU85L uses a three-channel laser system to generate colors with individual red and blue laser light sources with green created by LG’s exclusive Wheel-less Laser and LED technology and another blue light source".
LG claims this arrangement allows the projector to show 97 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. The color processing provided is up to 12-bit, so enough for proper HDR portrail. Both the LASER and LED projector support only support for HDR10. Brightness is specified as up to 2,700 ANSI lumens. The HU70L LED projector is more compact and provides 1500 ANSI lumens that covers 92 percent of the DCI-P3 color space.
No MSRPs have been provided, but the HU85L retails for $5,999 in the US.
