  • Panasonic shows Megacon(trast) dual LCD TV at IFA

According to this Dutch source, both the regular LCD layer and the light modulating LCD layer offer 4K resolution, the Panasonic announcement did not specify the spatial resolution of the second layer. The Hisense TV using a 65" BOE incell dual layer LCD Panel, shown earlier this year uses only 1080P in the modulating layer.

This two layer approach multiplies the contrast ratio, where the IPS panels each have a 1000:1 on-off contrast ratio, this multiplies to 1000x1000 or 1 million to one.

Overal brightness is 1000 nits, or cd/m2, and colourspace is 99% of P3.

Panasonic LCD announced the technology and first panel back in december 2016, several monitor manfacturers started using this 30" panel from 2017 onwards. In reference monitors costing roughly 30 to 45 thousand euro's/dollars. Panasonic Broadcast being conspicuously absent from the list of makers of reference monitors using the Panasonic LCD 30" dual cell LCD panel. Till now, as Panasonic shows it off as a prototype 55" mastering monitor. So expect it be on show at the International Broadcast Convention IBC in Amsterdam next week.

Sony is also moving toward this type of display away from RGB OLD for its mastering and reference monitors.

Panasonic Pushes the Boundaries of TV at IFA
Panasonic at IFA in Berlin showed two (the second being the transparant OLED it first showed in Milan) extraordinary prototype TVs which demonstrate how it is working on pushing the boundaries of TV.

One prototype, codenamed “MegaCon” for Mega Contrast, uses dual LCD layers to deliver black performance which rivals that of an OLED TV whilst also being capable of high brightness too.

The second prototype is a transparent OLED, the result of a conceptual research project by Panasonic and Vitra, shows how Panasonic is working on better integrating electronic devices into living spaces by having them melt into the background when not in use.

    Codename: MegaCon
The “MegaCon” Dual Panel LCD monitor prototype has been developed in-house using a Panasonic manufactured module and fully utilises over half a century of Panasonic television expertise.

It uses a high performance 4K outer panel with a monochrome inner panel to modulate the direct LED backlight, thus delivering pixel-level dimming and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 which is unheard of for LCD panels. In terms of brightness it can hold a full field peak brightness of 1000 nits indefinitely, whilst also covering 99% of the DCI P3 colour standard.

Following exhaustive testing by Hollywood studios and post production houses, it delivers mastering monitor levels of colour accuracy.

Furthermore, unlike other similar dual panel LCD displays, based on feedback from the Hollywood community it also features a very wide viewing angle without any loss of colour fidelity and uses unique Panasonic technology to eliminate any parallax effect between the dual panels.

John Archer also reports it uses two 4K lcd layers, but Vincent Theoh says it is 1080P only like BOE/Hisense.

Interesting detail, two minutes in: pointing out paralax and contrast/color shift on the 30" Sony version, with Panasonic trying to limit this.
